Adapted Version
Once, a brave man lived. His name was Brian. He had two brothers. Their names were Ur and Urcar. They were strong chiefs. Brian and his brothers made Luga angry. They did wrong.
Luga was very sad. His son, Kian, was gone. Brian and his brothers had hurt Kian. Luga gave Brian a hard task to make things right. It was a very big task. Brian must find a special roast stick. This roast stick was old. It was from Fina. Fina was a far place.
Brian and his brothers got on their boat. They sailed on the big blue ocean. The sun shone. The waves crashed. They sailed for a very long time. They looked for the island of Fina.
They met a very old man. He knew many old things. He told them about Fina. Fina was not an island not now. It was deep, deep under the water. A magic spell made it sink long ago.
Brian put on his special clothes. It was a water suit. He put on a clear helmet. He told Ur and Urcar, "Wait here."
Brian jumped into the big sea. He went down, down, down. His brothers could not see him. He was gone from sight.
Brian walked in the deep, deep ocean. It was dark. Fish swam past. He walked for a very long time. He looked for Fina. He looked for many days. At last, he found the sunken island. He was very brave.
Ur and Urcar waited on the boat. They looked at the water. They were very worried. Brian was gone so long. The day passed. The night came. Will Brian come back to them?
The brothers were very sad. They thought Brian was lost. They almost left the place. But then, they saw a sparkle! It was Brian's clear helmet. It shone deep in the water. It was a good sign.
Brian came up from the water. He held the roast stick. It was in his hand. He did the hard task! His brothers cheered. They were very happy.
Original Story
III.
Brian’s Water-dress.
Brian, Ur, and Urcar, the three sons of Turenn, were Dedanaan chiefs. They slew Kian, the father of Luga of the Long Arms, who was grandson of Balor of the Evil Eye. Luga imposed an extraordinary eric fine on the sons of Turenn, part of which was “the cooking-spit of the women of Fincara.” For a quarter of a year Brian and his brothers sailed hither and thither over the wide ocean, landing on many shores, seeking tidings of the Island of Fincara. At last they met a very old man, who told them that the island lay deep down in the waters, having been sunk beneath the waves by a spell in times long past.
Then Brian put on his water-dress, with his helmet of transparent crystal on his head, telling his brothers to wait his return. He leaped over the side of the ship, and sank at once out of sight. He walked about for a fortnight down in the green salt sea, seeking for the Island of Fincara, and at last he found it.
His brothers waited for him in the same spot the whole time, and when he came not they began to fear he would return no more. At last they were about to leave the place, when they saw the glitter of his crystal helmet deep down in the water, and immediately after he came to the surface with the cooking-spit in his hand.––“Old Celtic Romances” (Joyce), p. 87.

Cultural Context
This story is an excerpt from a larger cycle of Irish mythology, specifically the 'Children of Tuirenn' (or 'Turenn'), which details the arduous tasks they must complete as atonement for Kian's murder. The 'eric fine' was a real legal concept in ancient Ireland.
