Lina was a little princess. She lived with her father, King Ecca. Their home was a nice land. It was near a big green field. King Ecca liked this place very much. His people lived there too. It was a happy place for all. Lina had a little dog.

One day, a magic well was there. It had special water inside. The water came out of the well. It came out too much, very fast. The water spread over all the land. It made a big, big new lake. The lake covered all now.

The water came very fast. King Ecca was there. His folk were there too. The big water swept them away. They could not stay in their home. Many people went away from the land. It was a very sad time then.

But Lina was safe. Her little dog was safe too. They were in a special room. It was under water, a secret place. God kept them safe there. They stayed for one whole year. Lina was not alone then.

Lina was in the room. She felt alone now. She wanted to play outside very much. She saw many happy fish. They swam in the water. The fish were happy and free. They swam all around her room.

Lina made a special wish. She wished to be a fish. She wanted to swim with the fish. She wanted to swim in the lake. She wanted to be free and happy. Her wish was very strong.

Her wish came true! Lina changed. Her body became a fish. It was a big, nice fish tail. Her face was still Lina's face. Her top part was a girl. She was a special fish-girl now.

Her little dog changed too. It became a playful otter. The otter loved water very much. Now Lina and her friend could swim. They played in the big, blue lake. They were very happy now.

V.

Liban the Mermaid.

Liban was the daughter of Ecca, son of Mario, King of Munster. Ecca, having conquered the lordship of the half of Ulster, settled down with his people in the plain of the Grey Copse, which is now covered by the waters of Lough Necca, now Lough Neagh. A magic well had sprung up in the plain, and not being properly looked after by the woman in charge of it, its waters burst forth over the plain, drowning Ecca and nearly all his family. Liban, although swept away like the others, was not drowned. She lived for a whole year, with her lap-dog, in a chamber beneath the lake, and God protected her from the water. At the end of that time she was weary, and when she saw the speckled salmon swimming and playing all round her, she prayed to be changed into a salmon that she might swim with the others through the green, salt sea. Her prayer was granted; she took the shape of a salmon, except her face and breast, which did not change. And her lap-dog was changed into an otter, and attended her afterwards whithersoever she went as long as she lived in the sea.

It is nearly eight hundred years ago since the story was transcribed from some old authority into the Book of the Dun Cow, the oldest manuscript of Gaelic literature we possess.––Joyce’s “Old Celtic Romances,” p. 97.

Characters 3 characters

Liban ★ protagonist

human-mermaid hybrid young adult female

Originally a human princess of Munster, she was transformed into a mermaid. Her lower body is that of a large, speckled salmon, while her upper body, from the waist up, retains her human form. Her skin would be fair, typical of Irish lineage, with a healthy complexion from living in water.

Attire: As a mermaid, she wears no clothing in the traditional sense. Her human upper body would be bare, or perhaps subtly covered by her long hair or natural, shimmering scales that blend into her salmon tail. Any adornment would be natural, like strands of seaweed or small shells.

Wants: Initially, her motivation is survival and escape from her confined underwater chamber. Later, it is a desire for freedom, companionship, and the ability to move freely in the sea.

Flaw: Her initial vulnerability to the flood and her weariness in confinement. Her hybrid form, while granting freedom in water, would limit her interaction with the human world.

Transforms from a human princess facing tragedy and confinement into a free-swimming mermaid, embracing a new existence in the sea.

Her human face and breast atop a large, speckled salmon tail.

Resilient, adaptable, prayerful, weary (initially), playful (after transformation). She demonstrates a strong will to survive and a desire for companionship and freedom.

Liban's Lap-dog ◆ supporting

otter (formerly dog) adult unknown

Initially a small, domestic lap-dog, it was transformed into a sleek, brown otter. Otters are known for their streamlined bodies, short legs, webbed feet, and long, muscular tails, perfectly adapted for aquatic life. Its fur would be dense and water-repellent.

Attire: None, as an animal.

Wants: To remain with and attend Liban.

Flaw: Its loyalty might make it vulnerable if Liban were in danger.

Transforms from a land-dwelling pet to an aquatic companion, maintaining its loyalty to Liban.

A sleek, brown otter swimming closely beside a mermaid.

Loyal, companionable, adaptable, playful (implied by its transformation to swim with Liban).

Ecca ○ minor

human adult male

As King of Munster, he would likely be a man of imposing presence, possibly with a strong build. His skin would be fair, typical of ancient Irish people.

Attire: As a King of Munster, he would wear garments appropriate for an ancient Irish chieftain: a tunic of wool or linen, possibly with a cloak fastened by a brooch, and trousers. Colors would likely be natural dyes, perhaps deep blues, greens, or reds, indicating his status.

Wants: To conquer and settle his people in new lands.

Flaw: His ultimate downfall was the negligence of his appointed guardian for the magic well, leading to his death.

His story is brief and tragic, ending with his drowning.

A king in ancient Irish attire, overseeing his newly conquered lands.

Conquering, settling, responsible (in setting up the woman to watch the well), but ultimately tragic.
