The Shipwrecked Traveler
by Henry Wallace Phillips · from Fables for the Times
Adapted Version
A man was in the big, blue water. He needed help to get to the land. The Traveler fought the big waves. The water pushed him. He wanted to reach the sand. He tried very hard.
A wave brought him to the sand. He felt very tired. Another wave pulled him back. The water was strong. He went to the sand again. He fought the sea.
The Traveler shouted for help. "Help me!" he cried. People were on the land. They saw the man. Many people watched him.
The people came to the sand. They wore special clothes. Women wore milkmaid dresses. Men wore cavalier suits. They walked close to the water. But they stopped far away.
They did not help the man. They started to sing a song. "Save him!" sang the Woman Singer. "We will save him!" sang the Man Singer. All the people sang loudly. They sang about saving him.
The people sang their song. The water pulled the man. It pulled him far away. He was in the deep water. He was alone again.
A new wave came to the sand. It brought the Traveler back. He screamed very loud. "Help me!" he cried. He needed help now.
The Main Woman Singer walked. She sang a pretty song. It was a long song. She sang about the man. She sang about the waves. The waves were not kind.
The Main Woman Singer stopped. The Deep Singer stepped up. He sang a new song. He sang about saving the man. He said he would help.
The Deep Singer walked forward. He walked to the water. He wanted to show he would help.
The Traveler was on the sand. He was very still. He did not move at all. He made no sound. He could not be helped now.
The people saw the man. They sang a sad song. It was a very sad song. They sang for the man.
Then the people went home. They went to eat lunch. The man was still. Help people when they need it. Singing about help is not helping. Always help when you can.
Original Story
The Shipwrecked Traveler.
A man who had traveled over many countries was shipwrecked off the coast of Opera land. After a desperate battle with the waves he managed to near the shore where the cruel waves played with him like a cat with a mouse. He would pull himself up the beach, half fainting, and a great, dancing, hissing breaker would pounce upon him and drive him back.
He called for help until the inhabitants espied him.
They came in a group, the women costumed as milkmaids and the men as cavaliers.
After making about twenty feet the company stopped.
"Oh! save him, save him!" sang the soprano.
"Yes, yes! we will save him!" sang back the tenor.
Then everybody sang "Save him, save him; oh, yes, we will save him, save him from the sea!!!"
The sopranos took a B flat on the last note, while the tenors and altos rambled up and down the scale and the bassos bombarded the theme with their deepest chest tones.
In the meantime the traveler had been washed out to sea. As the next wave brought him to the strand the company advanced once more a short distance, and began.
"In the name of Mercy, help me!" screamed the drowning man.
"Oh, hear his piteous cry," sang the tenors, and the prima donna stepped out and sang a beautiful aria beginning "Now the cruel waves advancing." After she had finished the bass got in front of the company.
He described how his strong arm had plucked the stranger from a watery grave, and advanced to the beach to suit the action to the words.
But, alas! the traveler had given up the ghost several minutes before. Then the company sang a miserere and went home to lunch.

Plot Summary
A shipwrecked traveler struggles against the waves off the coast of 'Opera land.' The inhabitants, dressed in costumes, spot him and, instead of offering immediate aid, begin to sing elaborate operatic numbers about saving him. While they perform a lengthy aria and a bass describes his heroic rescue, the traveler drowns. The company then sings a lament for his death before returning home for lunch, highlighting the moral that performative gestures are useless in a crisis.
