Once, a village had an old, special rock. People called it Gloshed's Stone. This stone was big. It was important to many people. They loved this old stone very much.

Kai was a kind sailor. He lived in this small village. One day, Kai took a long boat trip. He went far away from his home. His big boat sailed on the sea.

Kai sailed for many days. One night, he saw a light. It was on a faraway island. The light looked like a warm fire. It burned for many days.

Kai and his friends went to the island. They wanted to see the fire. They hoped to find a safe place. A place where they could rest. Their boat stopped near the land.

By the fire, Kai saw a man. He was a very old man. He looked kind and wise. He sat by the warm fire. He wanted to feel warm.

The old man looked at Kai. He asked, "Where are you from?" Kai told his village. The old man asked more. "Do you know Ulfve Hill?" he said. "And Gloshed's Stone in Thorsby?"

Kai answered the old man. "Yes! I know Ulfve Hill," he said. "It is a big hill. I do not know Gloshed's Stone." Kai was sad.

The old man spoke again. "Please tell your village people," he said. "Be kind to old stones. Do not break Gloshed's Stone. Do this, your boat will have good winds. Always good winds for your trip."

Kai promised the old man. "I will tell them!" he said. Kai then asked a question. "What is your name, kind sir?" he asked. "Do you know my village?"

The old man smiled. "My name is Grandpa Thore," he said. "I used to live in your village. My family sleeps near Ulfve Hill. We loved Gloshed's Stone." He looked at the fire.

Kai sailed back to his home. He told everyone his story. He spoke of Grandpa Thore. He spoke of Gloshed's Stone. Kai kept his promise.

Soon, Kai was a good farmer. He had many happy plants. He had many happy animals. It was like a little magic. He kept his promise. He cared for the old stone.

It is good to keep your promises. It is good to care for old places. When you do this, good things can happen. Good things can happen to you.

Gloshed’s Altar.1

South of Thorsby Church, among the mountains, lies a shattered rock called Gloshed’s Altar, concerning which there is an old tradition still living upon the lips of the people, as follows:

A long time ago a man from the parish of Säfve went upon a Hollandish ship, on a whaling cruise. After the vessel had been tossed about the sea for some time, land was one day sighted, and upon the land was seen a fire which continued to burn many days.

It was determined that some of the ship’s crew should go ashore, in the hope that shelter might be found, and among those who went ashore was our hero. When the strand was reached they found there an old man sitting by a fire of logs, endeavoring to warm himself.

“Where did you come from?” asked the old man.

“From Holland!” answered the sailors.

“But where were you born?” to our hero.

“In Hisingen, in the parish of Säfve,” he answered.

“Are you acquainted in Thorsby?”

“Yes, indeed!”

“Do you know where Ulfve Mountain lies?”

“I have often passed it, as the road from Göteborg to Marstrand over Hisingen and through Thorsby goes past there.”

“Do the large stones and hills remain undisturbed?” asked the old man.

“Yes, except one stone, which, if I remember correctly, is toppling over,” said the Hisinger.

“That is too bad! But do you know where Gloshed’s Altar is, and does it remain sound?”

“Upon that point,” said the sailor, “I have no knowledge.”

Finally the old man continued: “If you will say to those who now live in Thorsby and Torrebräcka that they shall not destroy the stones and elevations at the foot of Ulfve Mount, and, above all, to take care of Gloshed’s Altar, you shall have fair winds for the rest of your voyage.”

The Hisinger promised to deliver the message when he arrived home, whereupon he asked the old man his name, and how he, living so far from Thorsby, was so well acquainted with matters there.

“I’ll tell you,” said he, “my name is Thore Brock, and I at one time lived there, but was banished. All my relations are buried at Ulfve Mountain, and at Gloshed’s Altar we were wont to do homage to our gods and to make our offerings.”

Hereupon they separated.

When the man from Hisinger returned home he went about the fulfillment of his promise, and, without knowing how, he soon became one of the principal farmers in the parish.

1 In Bohuslän and in Dalland the belief is quite general that the giants, leaving those regions, settled upon Dovre in Norway, or upon some uninhabited island in the North Sea, and that travelers are eagerly questioned about their former home.

Characters 2 characters

The Hisinger (Sailor) ★ protagonist

human young adult male

A sturdy, average-height man, likely with a weathered complexion from sea voyages. His build would be practical for a sailor, strong but not overly bulky.

Attire: Practical, durable sailor's attire typical of 17th-18th century Hollandish whaling ships: likely a coarse wool or canvas jacket, sturdy breeches, and simple leather boots. Colors would be muted, such as dark blue, grey, or brown, to withstand the rigors of sea life.

Wants: Initially driven by the need for shelter and safe passage for his ship. Later, motivated by a sense of duty to fulfill his promise and a desire for good fortune.

Flaw: Perhaps a touch of naivety or over-eagerness to please, leading him to make a promise to a stranger without fully understanding the implications.

He transforms from a simple sailor on a whaling cruise to a prosperous farmer in his home parish, seemingly due to the blessing received for fulfilling his promise.

His sturdy, sea-worn sailor's attire, perhaps with a hint of the northern European coast in his features.

Curious, observant, reliable (keeps his promise), and practical. He is open to new experiences and respectful of ancient traditions.
