Kadnihak
by Herman Hofberg · from Swedish fairy tales
Adapted Version
High in mountains lived some people. They had children who loved to play.
High in the mountains lived little people. They were called Mountain Spirits. They had long green hair. They wore red clothes. Mountain Spirits liked quiet. They did not like noise.
A group of people lived in tents. Their tents were in the mountains. The grown-ups left the camp. They went to a big market in town. The children stayed at the camp. They waited for the grown-ups.
The children played loudly. They ran and shouted. They laughed and sang. They played many games. They made a lot of noise. They did not stop. They had so much fun.
A Wise Old Woman saw them. She told them, "Be quiet! Spirits dislike noise." But the children did not listen. They kept playing loudly. They did not stop. They made more noise.
At night, the camp was quiet. The children were in their tents. Then, strange sounds came. They came from the mountains. Little bells tinkled. Soft barks were heard. Tiny reindeer hooves made noise. The sounds grew louder. The Mountain Spirits were stirring. They were coming closer.
The children heard the sounds. They were in their tents. The sounds were very strange. They felt a little scared. They held their breath. They were very quiet.
The Wise Old Woman was brave. She stood up. She saw the little Mountain Spirits. They were coming closer to the camp. She went outside her tent. She went to talk to them.
She talked to the Mountain Spirits. She spoke calmly to them. The spirits were upset. She promised the children would be quiet. She said they would be respectful. She would teach them good ways. The spirits listened to her words. They stopped.
The Mountain Spirits turned around. They went back into the mountains. The sounds went away. The camp was safe again. The danger was gone.
From that day, the children remembered. They played quietly. They listened to the Wise Old Woman. They were respectful. The camp was peaceful.
So, children learned a lesson. They remembered to be quiet and listen. The mountains stayed peaceful.
Original Story
Kadnihak.
Kadnihaks are a kind of spirit which dwell underground, at times, showing themselves to man dressed in red attire, and having long hair which resembles green flax and reaches to their waists. Like the Lapps, they have reindeer and dogs, and like them also in this and their dress, their language and songs are the same. Some of their songs have even been learned and are called “Kadniha-vuolle.”
It happened in the last century that a great number of the mountain Lapps had pitched their tents in the vicinity of Qvikkjokk. It was at the season when the court and fair were in session in Jokkmokk. In the absence of the older people, in attendance at court or fair, the youths and maids remaining at home let themselves out for a good time at all kinds of games. An old Lapp woman, knowing that the Kadnihaks, or Trolls, living in the adjacent mountains would not tolerate such a confusion, warned the young people, but in vain.
Evening came, and all retired to rest, but it had hardly become quiet in the Lapp tents before the Kadnihaks were heard to be astir. The tinkling of bells, cries of men, barking of dogs, noise of reindeer and a general commotion prevailed on all sides.
The Lapps were seized with fear and trembling.
The old Lapp woman arose from her bed of reindeer skins and peeked out through the tent door. With horror she saw the whole tribe of sprites marching straight down upon the camp. No time was to be wasted. She threw about her a skin and hurried out to treat with the angry Trolls. With great trouble and promises that she would see to it that the children would conduct themselves better in the future, she induced them to change their course, thus staying the danger the camp was in of being trampled down. From that day there was quiet in the camp as long as it continued there.
