The Child Phantom
by Herman Hofberg · from Swedish fairy tales
Adapted Version
Once, a little ghost lived there. It was a baby ghost. It was very sad. The baby ghost made sad sounds. It could not rest. It wandered around a big house.
One night, The Shoemaker worked. He sewed shoes. He worked softly in his room. Then, The Little Ghost came. It stood before him.
The Little Ghost spoke. "Why do you sit there?" it asked. "Move, please." The Little Ghost wanted to dance. It needed space to move.
The Shoemaker was kind. "Dance away," he said. The Little Ghost danced. It danced a sad dance. Then it went away. It was gone.
Soon, The Little Ghost came back. It was still restless. "I will dance again," it said. "I will dance near your light." It came close.
"No," said The Shoemaker. "Leave the light." He asked, "Who are you? Why are you here?" He wanted to help.
The Little Ghost spoke softly. "I live under the steps," it said. "Under the porch steps." "Watch at morning light. You will see my mother. She wears a red scarf."
"Please help me," said The Little Ghost. "Help me find peace. Then I will not be sad. I will stop making noises. I will not dance again."
The Shoemaker was kind. He promised to help. "Yes," he said. "I will help you." The Little Ghost left then.
The next day, morning came. A woman walked to the house. She wore a red scarf. It was on her head. The Shoemaker saw her.
The Shoemaker looked under the steps. He dug in the ground. He found a small wooden box. Inside were little baby bones. This was The Little Ghost.
The Shoemaker took the box. The Woman with the Red Scarf helped. They took the baby bones. They went to the churchyard. They gave the baby a good rest.
The Woman with the Red Scarf was sad. She knew her mistake. She hid the baby long ago. Now she helped the baby rest. She felt better now.
The Little Ghost was calm. It did not make sad noises. It did not dance again. All were happy for the baby. The Shoemaker felt good.
Now The Little Ghost was quiet. It was happy. The Shoemaker was happy too. He helped the baby find peace. All need a good place to rest. It is good to be kind. Help others.
Original Story
The Child Phantom.
Many years ago there died, on the estate of Sundshult, in the parish of Nafverstad, a child of illegitimate birth, which, because of this, was not christened and could not be accorded Christian burial, or a place in heaven, and whose spirit, therefore, was left to wander the earth, disturbing the rest and making night uncomfortable for the people of the neighborhood.
One time, just before Christmas, the parish shoemaker, on his rounds, was detained at the house of a patron, and, having much work before him, he was still sewing late into the night, when he was unexpectedly startled from his employment by a little child appearing before him, which said:
“Why do you sit there? Move aside.”
“For what?” asked the shoemaker.
“Because I wish to dance,” said the spectre.
“Dance away, then!” said the shoemaker.
When the child had danced some time it disappeared, but returned soon and said:
“I will dance again, and I’ll dance your light out for you.”
“No,” said the shoemaker, “let the light alone. But who are you that you are here in this manner?”
“I live under the lower stone of the steps to the porch.”
“Who put you there?” asked the shoemaker.
“Watch when it dawns, and you will see my mother coming, wearing a red cap. But help me out of this, and I’ll never dance again.”
This the shoemaker promised to do, and the spectre vanished.
The next day a servant girl from the neighboring estate came, who wore upon her head a red handkerchief.
Digging was begun under the designated step, and in time the skeleton of a child was found, incased in a wooden tub. The body was that day taken to the churchyard, and the mother, who had destroyed her child, turned over to the authorities. Since then the child spectre has danced no more.
