Long ago, a giant lived on a hill. His home was near a church. The church had loud bells. The bells rang every day. Big Giant did not like the sound. He moved far away. He went to a small island. It was far in the sea.

Many years passed. A ship sailed on the sea. It came from Skalunda. A big storm hit the ship. The ship broke. Some sailors swam to the island. They were safe on the sand.

Big Giant sat by a fire. He was very old now. He could not see well. He felt the warm fire. The sailors came near him. Big Giant spoke to them. "Where are you from?" he asked.

"We are from Skalunda," said a Clever Sailor. Big Giant was happy. He missed his old home. "Give me your hand," he said. "I want to feel a person from Skalunda."

The Clever Sailor felt fear. He gave Big Giant a metal stick. It was from the fire. Big Giant held the stick. He squeezed it very hard. The metal broke in his hand. "Ah, very strong!" he said.

Big Giant asked, "Is Skalunda Hill there?" "No," the sailor said. Small birds scratched it down." Big Giant felt sad. He thought about his old home.

Big Giant said, "My wife built it. Not strong." He asked, "Are Halle, Hunneberg there?" "Yes." Big Giant smiled. "I built those hills," he said.

Big Giant asked, "Is Karin alive?" "Yes," sailor said. Big Giant was very happy. He gave the sailor a big belt. "Take this belt to Karin," he said. "It is a gift from me."

The sailors left the island. They sailed back to Skalunda. They found Giantess Karin. They gave her the big belt. It was from Big Giant.

Giantess Karin was very careful. She wanted to test the belt. She saw a big oak tree. She wrapped the belt around the tree. She watched the belt closely.

The belt was very strong. It pulled the oak tree. The tree came out of the ground. It flew north, far away. A big, deep hole was left. The hole was in the ground.

Water came into the big hole. It became a fresh spring. People called it the best spring. It was a gift from long, long ago.

The Giant of Skalunda.

On Skalunda Hill, near Skalunda Church, there lived, in olden times, a giant, who, much annoyed by the ringing of the church bells, was finally compelled to move away, and took up his residence on an island, far away in the North Sea. One time a ship was wrecked upon this island, and among those of her crew rescued were several men from Skalunda.

“Where are you from?” inquired the giant, who was now old and blind, and was stretched out warming himself before a fire of logs.

“We are from Skalunda, if you wish to know,” said one of the men.

“Give me your hand, for I wish to know if still there is warm blood in Sweden,” said the giant.

The man, afraid of the grasp of the giant, drew a glowing iron rod from the fire, which he extended to the giant, who, grasping it with great force, squeezed it until the iron ran between his fingers.

“Ah, yes, there is still warm blood in Sweden,” exclaimed he, “but does Skalunda Hill still exist?”

“No, the birds have scratched it down,” answered the man.

“It could not stand,” remarked the giant, “for my wife and daughter built it one Sunday morning. But how is it with Halle and Hunneberg? They remain, surely, for I myself built them.”

Upon receiving a reply in the affirmative, he asked if Karin, a giantess, still lived, and when to this he was answered yes, he gave them a belt and bade them take it to Karin and say to her that she must wear it in his memory.

The men took the belt, and upon their return home gave it to Karin, but, before she would put it upon herself, she wrapped it around an oak which was growing near by. Hardly was this done when the oak was torn from the ground, and sailed off northward as if in a gale. In the ground where the oak stood, there was left a deep pit, and here to-day is pointed out the best spring in Stommen.

Characters 3 characters

The Giant of Skalunda ★ protagonist

giant elderly male

Immensely large and powerful, even in old age. His grip is strong enough to melt iron. He is blind, suggesting age has taken his sight. His body is likely weathered and robust, accustomed to the elements and heavy labor.

Attire: Simple, practical clothing befitting a giant living in the wild, likely made of rough animal hides or coarse woven materials, perhaps a tunic or cloak. Colors would be earthy and natural.

Wants: To reconnect with his past, his homeland (Sweden), and his loved ones, despite being exiled. He wants to know if what he built and loved still stands.

Flaw: His age and blindness make him vulnerable to deception. His nostalgia and longing for the past can be exploited.

He remains largely unchanged, serving as a static, ancient figure representing the past. His interaction with the men from Skalunda brings him a brief moment of connection before he fades back into his solitary existence.

An ancient, blind giant with a long white beard, stretched out by a massive log fire, his hand extended.

Curious, nostalgic, powerful, somewhat isolated, and surprisingly gentle despite his strength. He longs for connection to his past and homeland.
