The Farmer's Wish

CEFR A1 Age 5 361 words 2 min Canon 100/100

Once upon a time, there was a farmer. He lived near a big, green mountain. Trolls lived there long ago. The Trolls were very old. The farmer had a good farm.

One summer evening, the Farmer walked. He saw his golden fields. The grain was tall and bright. Much good grain grew there. He felt very happy. He felt proud of his crops. He thought of a big harvest. It would be a good year.

The Farmer liked his crop. He wished for help. The fields were very big. "I want all this cut fast. Cut it by morning light. I will give my best Cow." He loved her much. She gave good milk. He made a big promise.

The Farmer went home. He went to his soft bed. He closed his eyes. He went to sleep fast. The night was quiet.

In the night, he heard strange sounds. Swish-swish, went the fields. Clip-clop, went the tools. He heard voices too. They called out loud. The Trolls were working hard. They worked very fast. The Farmer did not know words. The sounds were strange. He listened from his bed. He wondered what it was.

The sun came up. The Farmer woke up fast. He ran to his fields. He saw a big sight. All the golden grain was cut. It lay in neat bundles. The fields were all clear. He felt much wonder. It was a magic sight. The Trolls had done their work.

The Farmer knew who did it. The Trolls did the work. He remembered his big promise. He had offered his best Cow. He went to his stable now. He looked for his best Cow. His heart beat fast.

His best Cow was not there. The stall was empty. The Trolls took her away. They took her for their hard work. The Farmer felt very sad. He understood the price now. His best Cow was gone. He missed her much.

The farmer was sad about his cow. But his fields were cut! He had a good harvest. He learned a lesson: Be careful what you wish. Wishes come true, but they can cost much. Think before you wish.

The Harvesters.

In the parish of Ekshärad lies a mountain, Säljeberg, which was formerly the dwelling place of Trolls and giants, now exterminated.

Near the mountain dwelt a farmer, on one of the best farms in the parish. One summer evening he went over his fields admiring the seas of golden grain and exulting at the abundant harvest promised him.

“God be praised for this crop,” said he. “If I now could have all these fields harvested by early morning I would give my best cow.”

Hereupon he returned to his home and went to bed. Through the whole night the noise of reaping was heard in the fields and the Trolls calling:

“Make bands and bind; let the farmer dry it himself.”

As soon as sunrise the farmer was upon his feet and out into the fields, where, to his indescribable amazement, he saw them reaped and the grain lying in bundles upon the ground. Guessing that the Trolls had had a hand in the work, he sprang to the stable, there to find a stall empty and his best cow gone.

Characters 3 characters

The Farmer ★ protagonist

human adult male

A sturdy, broad-shouldered man of medium height, with hands calloused from years of farm work. His frame suggests a life of physical labor and resilience, typical of a prosperous farmer in rural Sweden.

Attire: A practical, durable linen shirt in a natural, undyed color, possibly with a leather vest over it. Sturdy wool trousers in a dark, earthy tone, tucked into knee-high leather boots. He might wear a simple, wide-brimmed felt hat to protect from the sun.

Wants: To ensure a bountiful harvest and maintain the prosperity of his farm.

Flaw: His impulsiveness and perhaps a touch of greed, leading him to make a bargain without fully considering the consequences.

He learns a lesson about making rash promises and the unexpected consequences of supernatural intervention, reinforcing the importance of careful consideration.

Industrious, pragmatic, observant, somewhat impulsive (making a rash promise), and ultimately a man of his word.

The Trolls ◆ supporting

magical creature ageless non-human

Though not explicitly described, traditional Swedish trolls are often depicted as ancient, gnarled beings, resembling moss-covered rocks or twisted trees. They would be robust and strong, capable of immense physical labor, possibly with rough, earthy skin and disproportionate features.

Attire: No specific wardrobe, as they are likely depicted as part of the natural landscape, perhaps with rough, animal-hide garments or simply their own earthy forms.

Wants: To fulfill a bargain, perhaps for the sake of mischief or to claim their due.

Flaw: Their literal interpretation of bargains and their susceptibility to being 'exterminated' by humans (as mentioned in the backstory).

They act as a force of nature, fulfilling a human's wish and exacting a price, reinforcing their ancient, transactional nature.

Literal-minded, industrious (when motivated by a bargain), mischievous, and possessive of their mountain domain.

The Best Cow ○ minor

animal adult female

A large, healthy dairy cow, likely of a traditional Swedish breed such as the Swedish Red-and-White or Fjällras. Her coat would be a rich, healthy color, perhaps reddish-brown and white, or a creamy white with dark markings. She would have a sturdy build, full udder, and clear, intelligent eyes, indicating her value to the farmer.

Attire: None, as she is an animal.

Wants: To graze and produce milk.

Flaw: Being a domestic animal, she is vulnerable to being taken as payment.

She is taken as payment for the Trolls' labor, serving as the tangible cost of the farmer's impulsive wish.

Gentle, docile, and valuable.
