The Knights of ÅLlaberg
by Herman Hofberg · from Swedish fairy tales
Adapted Version
A farmer took a long trip. He had rye to sell. It was night. He came to a big house. "I can sell rye here," he thought. He did not want to go far.
The farmer went to the door. The big door opened by itself. No one was there. The farmer walked inside. He was in a very big room. The room was quiet. It felt a little magic.
He saw a big table in the room. On the table were twelve golden helmets. They shone very bright. Around the room, twelve knights slept. They wore shiny armor. The armor was very grand. The knights were very still. They slept a deep, deep sleep. It was a strange sight.
The farmer walked on. He came to a big stable. Inside were twelve big, nice horses. They had gold on their saddles. They had silver on their feet. The horses moved a little. They stamped their feet softly. They looked very strong. They waited for it.
The farmer was very eager. He wanted to know more about the horses. He went to one big horse. He touched its bridle. The bridle was made of gold. He touched it very softly. He wanted to feel it. He wondered about this place.
Then he heard a voice. The voice was deep. It asked, "Is it time?" Another voice answered. It was also deep. It said, "No, not yet!" Voices came. It was a big, big secret. He did not know who spoke.
The farmer was very surprised. He was a little scared. He did not wait. He ran fast. He ran out of the stable. He ran out of the big room. He ran out of the house.
He was outside again. He looked back. It was not a house. It was a mountain. The mountain was very big. It was a magic mountain.
He knew a secret. The knights were special. They sleep and wait. One day, they will wake up. They will help their country. This was a great secret.
The farmer never forgot his secret. The special knights still sleep. They wait.
Original Story
The Knights of Ållaberg.
One time a peasant, en route to Jönköping with a load of rye, came just at dusk to Ållaberg, where he discovered a grand mansion by the way. “Maybe I can sell my rye here,” thought he, “and so be spared the journey to Jönköping,” and, approaching the door, he knocked for admittance.
The door was at once opened by some unseen power, and the peasant entered.
Upon entering, he found himself in a grand hall. In the middle of the floor stood a large table and upon the table lay twelve golden helmets, grand beyond the power of description, and scattered around the room, deep in slumber, were twelve knights in glittering armor.
The peasant contemplated his beautiful surroundings, but, concluding he could not sell his rye here, went on, coming finally to a large stable, where he found standing twelve most magnificent steeds, bedecked with golden trappings and silver shoes on their hoofs, stamping in their stalls.
Curiosity getting the better of him, he took hold of the bridle of one of the horses in order to learn by what art it was made. Hardly had he touched it when he heard a voice call out, “Is it time now?” and another answer, “No, not yet!”
The peasant had now seen and heard as much as he desired, and, thoroughly frightened, hastened away. When he came out he found that he had been into the mountain instead of into a mansion, and that he had seen the twelve knights who sleep there until the country shall be in some great danger, when they will awake and help Sweden to defend herself against her foreign enemies.
