Long, long ago, a giant lived. He lived in a big mountain. His name was Lagge Gubben.

Lagge Gubben was a very old giant. He lived in a big mountain. A church stood near the mountain. His eyes were kind. His voice was deep. Lagge Gubben had white hair. It was like dove feathers. He was five hundred years old. The mountain was his home. He had lived there always. He saw many things. He saw many people.

One morning, Jacob walked by the mountain. The sun was bright. Birds sang in the trees. He went to the village. Jacob walked a long way. Lagge Gubben came out. He saw Jacob. "Good morning, Jacob!" he said. He smiled a little.

Lagge Gubben asked Jacob a question. "Will you come inside?" he said. "We can drink together now." "Please come into my home."

Jacob said no. "No, thank you," he said. "Save your drink for later." "Another day will surely come." "It is good to save things for tomorrow." "Do not use all things today."

Lagge Gubben felt a little sad. He looked at the ground. His big shoulders drooped. "That is good advice," he said. "I wish I knew this before." "I would be a richer man now." "I wish I saved more things." "My life would be better."

Jacob smiled. "It is okay!" he said. "You can still start saving now." "It is not too late."

Lagge Gubben looked sad again. "I must leave," he said. "I must leave my mountain home." "It will be very soon." "The church bells make me leave." "I do not like the bells."

Jacob tried to make him feel better. "Maybe you will come back?" he asked. "One day?"

Lagge Gubben sighed. "I will only come back," he said. "When the big lake is a green field." "And the green field is a big lake." Then he went inside. His mountain home. He went very slowly.

The Old Man of Lagga.

Near Lagga Church, in the municipality of Langhundra, is a singularly formed mountain. On the side of it toward the church is an opening, from which, it is said, two paths lead—the one south to a hill near the so called “Meadow Watcher’s Cottage,” the other north to Kashögen, near Kasby estate.

In the mountain lived a giant called Lagge Gubben—old man Lagge—who, when last seen, was at least five hundred years old, and his hair as white as the feathers of a dove.

Early one morning a peasant named Jacob going to the village of Lagga, passed the mountain, when the old mountain man came out and saluted him: “Good morning, Joppe! Will you come in and drink healths with me?”

“No, thank you,” replied Jacob, who had no desire for such companionship. “If you have more than you are able to drink, save it until morning, for there is another day coming.”

“That is good advice,” said Lagga. “Had I known that before, I should have been a richer man, now.”

“It is not yet too late,” replied the peasant.

“Yes it is, for I must leave here in the morning on account of the church bells,” said the giant, shaking his fist at Lagga clock tower.

“You will come again, never fear,” said Jacob consolingly.

“Yes, when Lagga Fjord becomes a field and Ostund Lake a meadow,” replied the giant with a sigh, and disappeared into the mountain.
