Once, a long time ago, a man walked. He walked on a rocky path. It was a cold day. The wind blew hard. This path was near a big mountain. People told strange stories about this mountain. Little creatures lived there. They were very secret.

The Man took a shortcut. He walked on the mountain path. The air was icy. The day was very cold. He wanted to go fast. He walked quickly.

The Man saw a small creature. It sat on a big stone. It was crying. Its face was wet. It looked like a child. The Man felt a little sad. He felt a pang.

The Little Creature was sad. The Man felt kind. He wanted to help. He had a good heart. He asked the creature a question. He said, "Where is your home?"

The Little Creature pointed. It pointed to the mountain. It said, "Here." It still cried. Its voice was small.

He asked, "How long?" "Six hundred years." Very old. It was a long, long time.

The Man did not believe. He thought it was a big fib. He felt angry now. He said, "You lie!" He would scold it.

The Little Creature cried more. Tears ran down. It said, "Don't scold. Father punished me today." It felt very scared. It shook a little.

The Man asked, "Why punished?" It told him. The story was strange. "I watched my grandpa." "I turned my back. He fell down."

The Man knew now. This was not a child. This was a very strange creature. It was very old. It was not human. The Man felt a little worried. He felt scared.

The Man held his walking stick. He held it tightly. He was ready for trouble. He wanted to be safe. He did not want trouble. He stood very still.

Then a loud crash came. It came from the big mountain. The sound was huge. The Little Creature was gone. It went away very fast. The Man was alone there. He looked all around. He saw nothing.

The Man felt a little surprised. He walked away quickly. He knew some things are very old. Some things are very strange. He learned a lesson. It is good to be safe.

The Pigmy of Folkared’s Cliff.

It is probable that there are few places more gloomy and uninviting than certain parts of the parish of Sibbarp, in the Province of Halland. Dark heaths cover a good portion of the parish, and from their dull brown surface rises, here and there, a lonely, cheerless mountain. One of these is Folkared’s Cliff, in the southern part of the parish, noted of old as the abiding-place of little Trolls and Pigmies.

One chilly autumn day a peasant, going from Hogared, in Ljungby, to Folkared, in Sibbarp, in order to shorten his journey took a short cut by way of the cliff, upon reaching which he perceived a Pigmy about the size of a child seven or eight years old, sitting upon a stone crying.

“Where is your home?” asked the peasant, moved by the seeming distress of the little fellow.

“Here,” sobbed the Pigmy, pointing to the mountain.

“How long have you lived here?” questioned the peasant in surprise.

“Six hundred years.”

“Six hundred years! You lie, you rascal, and you deserve to be whipped for it.”

“Oh! do not strike me,” pleaded the Pigmy, continuing to cry. “I have had enough of blows already to-day.”

“Who have you received them from?” asked the peasant.

“From my father.”

“What capers did you cut up that you were thus punished?”

“Oh, I was set to watch my old grandfather and when I chanced to turn my back he fell and hurt himself upon the floor.”

The peasant then understood what character of person he had met, and grasping his dirk he prepared to defend himself. But instantly he heard an awful crash in the mountain, and the pigmy had vanished.

Attire: Typical Swedish peasant attire for autumn: a thick, dark wool tunic or jacket over a linen shirt, sturdy wool trousers, and practical leather boots. He might wear a simple felt or wool cap to ward off the chill. Colors would be muted, natural dyes like browns, greys, and dark blues.

Wants: To shorten his journey and reach his destination. Later, to understand and defend himself against the unknown.

Flaw: His skepticism and quick temper lead him to accuse the Pigmy, potentially escalating the situation.

He begins as a traveler taking a shortcut, encounters a seemingly distressed child, becomes suspicious, and then realizes the supernatural nature of the being, preparing for defense.

The Pigmy ⚔ antagonist

Troll/Pigmy (magical creature) child (7-8 years old), but ancient in reality non-human

Wants: To avoid further punishment, to perhaps lure or deceive the peasant, or simply to express his genuine distress over his accident.

Flaw: His fear of his father and physical punishment. His small size makes him seem vulnerable.

Appears as a distressed child, reveals his true ancient nature through a slip of the tongue, and then vanishes magically when threatened.

A small, child-like figure with an ancient, sorrowful expression, sitting on a stone.

Deceptive, manipulative (feigning distress), ancient, prone to mischief (implied by his punishment), fearful of authority (his father), quick to vanish when threatened.
