Adapted Version
Here is the story.
---
There is a special hill. Its name is Stallsbacke. People tell a story about this place. A magic garden is near the hill. Some people go there. They get lost in the garden. This is a very old story.
Many people went to this garden. They stayed for a long time. It was hard to leave. They did not know how to go home. The garden kept them there. It was a strange place.
Old Man Löfberg walked home. It was late at night. It was a Thursday. He walked a path in the forest. He walked to his house. He was a kind old man.
Then, Old Man Löfberg saw a wall. It was a very tall wall. It had big gates. The gates were made of iron. He looked through the gates. He saw a garden. It was the most pretty garden. He had not seen such a place.
The moon was high in the sky. Its light shone on the garden. Old Man Löfberg saw many trees. The trees had much fruit. The bushes had many berries. The fruit and berries shone. They looked like bright jewels. They looked very good to eat.
An old man came to the gates. He was a strange man. "I am the garden man." He smiled at Löfberg. "Come into my garden." "Take fruit you want." He waved Old Man Löfberg in.
Old Man Löfberg felt a thing was wrong. He was a very wise man. He did not go in the garden. "No, thank you," he said. "My garden is good." "I have good fruit at home." He did not want that fruit.
The Strange Man was not happy. He got a little cross. A strong wind came fast. Whoosh! The wind blew his hat. It flew over the tall wall. It landed in the garden. Old Man Löfberg looked at his hat.
Old Man Löfberg thought fast. His hat was not so big. Being safe was more so. He did not go in the garden. He left his hat there. He turned and ran fast. He ran all the way home. He ran very fast.
A loud noise came from the forest. Boom! The sound was very big. Old Man Löfberg looked back. The tall wall was gone. The big gates were gone. The magic garden was gone too. It was not there now. Old Man Löfberg was safe.
Old Man Löfberg was safe at home. He knew it was good to be wise. Pretty things may not be good for us.
Original Story
The Troll’s Garden at Stallsbacke.
In the forest north of Stora Djulö, in the parish of Stora Malm, lies a hill called Stallsbacke—Stall Hill—because King Charles XI. is said to have had his stable there on one of his journeys.
Within the forest near the hill there is an enchanted garden where many a man has gone astray, and has been compelled to wander the whole night through, because he did not know that turning his coat inside out, or throwing fire at the sun, would give him the key to his deliverance.
Many have, during these wanderings, been imprisoned in the enchanted garden, but not all have liberated themselves from the enchantment as old Löfberg, the steward from Stora Djulö, succeeded in doing.
Late one Thursday evening, while traveling the path from the pasture home to the mansion, he found himself suddenly in the presence of a high wall with grated gates, beyond which was visible the most beautiful garden ever seen by man. The moon was high in the heavens, and Löfberg could distinguish objects as clearly as in daylight. He saw that the trees hung full of fruit, and that the bushes were bowed with berries, which glistened like precious stones. When he had viewed the magnificent sight a few minutes, and was about to go on, an old man, who proclaimed himself the gardener, presented himself, and invited Löfberg to go in and gather of the fruit what he pleased. But Löfberg was too wise for this. He understood that what he saw was the work of the Trolls, and answered that at home there was a much more beautiful garden, and that he had no occasion to go into strange gardens to get a few rotten, sour apples.
This he should not have said. Suddenly there came up a strong wind, which blew his hat over the wall, and, as Löfberg left it behind him and hastened home, there came a crash in the forest, whereupon the vision suddenly melted away.
