Once, a Hunter walked in the big forest. A strange storm came. Wind blew very hard. Sticks danced high in the air. The Hunter saw the big storm. It was a magic storm. He felt scared.

The Hunter had a sharp knife. He threw his knife at the strong wind. The strong wind stopped fast. The magic storm went away. Quiet came back quickly. It was like real magic. The Hunter felt safe again.

Later, the Hunter went hunting again. He walked very far. He did not know the way home. He was lost in the big forest. The sun went down low. He felt very tired.

He walked a long, long time. He saw a small hut. A woman cooked inside. She stirred a big, hot pot. She looked at the Hunter. "Come in," she said. "Eat with me." The Hunter went inside.

The woman gave him warm food. She gave him a small knife. The Hunter looked at the knife. It was his own knife. The same knife he threw. He threw it at the storm. He felt a bit strange inside.

The woman was a Troll Woman. She knew much about magic. The Hunter wanted to go home. He did not know the right way. The Troll Woman had a Magic Sled. "This sled will take you home," she said.

The Troll Woman showed a long rope. It was on the Magic Sled. "Tie three knots," she said. "Then untie one knot. Untie them one by one. You will go home very fast." The Hunter listened well.

The Hunter tied three knots. He got in the Magic Sled. He untied one knot. The rope pulled the sled. The Magic Sled went up high. It flew in the air. This was very new and strange.

The sled flew very fast. The Hunter untied another knot. The sled went much faster now. It zoomed through the blue sky. Wind blew hard in his face.

The Hunter untied the last knot. The Magic Sled went super, super fast. It flew like a swift bird. It was very, very quick. The ground looked far, far away. He held on very tight.

Suddenly, the Magic Sled stopped. It stopped very, very fast. The Hunter flew right out. He fell to the hard ground. He landed in his own yard. It was a big, big surprise.

The Hunter had a very sore leg. He bumped it very hard. He was home now. But his leg hurt much. The Hunter learned a lesson. Magic gifts can be tricky. Be careful with magic.

The Voyage in a Lapp Sled.

In the great forest west of Samsele, a hunter, early one morning, pursued his way in quest of game. About midday he ascended a ridge, where he was overtaken by a Troll-iling—a storm said to be raised by and to conceal a Troll—before which sticks and straws danced in the air. Quickly grasping his knife he threw it at the wind, which at once subsided, and in a few seconds the usual quiet reigned.

Some time later he was again hunting, when he lost his way. After a long and wearisome wandering he reached a Lapp hut, where he found a woman stirring something in a kettle. When she had concluded her cooking, she invited the hunter to dine, and gave him the same knife to eat with that he had thrown at the storm.

The following day he wished to return home, but could not possibly discover the course he should take, whereupon the Troll woman—for his hostess was none other—directed him to get into the Lapp sled, and attach to it a rope, in which he must tie three knots.

“Now, untie one knot at a time,” said she, “and you will soon reach home.”

The hunter untied one knot, as instructed, and away went the rope, dragging the sled after it into the air. After a time he untied another knot, and his speed was increased. Finally he untied the last knot, increasing the speed to such a rate that when the sled came to a standstill, as it did, suddenly, not long after, he concluded his journey, falling into his own yard with such force as to break his leg.

Characters 3 characters

The Hunter ★ protagonist

human adult male

A sturdy, broad-shouldered man of average height, accustomed to the rigors of the northern forest. His face is weathered from exposure to the elements, with a strong jawline and keen eyes that are always scanning for game. He moves with a quiet, deliberate grace typical of someone who spends much time tracking.

Attire: Thick, practical wool tunic in muted greens and browns, worn over a linen undershirt. He wears sturdy leather breeches and tall, fur-lined leather boots suitable for deep snow. A heavy, fur-trimmed cloak or jacket would be essential for the cold, and a leather belt holds his hunting tools.

Wants: To provide for himself through hunting, to return home safely after getting lost.

Flaw: Can be easily led astray by supernatural forces, perhaps overly trusting of strangers in unfamiliar circumstances.

Starts as a capable hunter, becomes a bewildered traveler, and ends up injured but returned home, having learned a harsh lesson about accepting help from unknown sources.

His sturdy, fur-trimmed hunting cloak and the large, practical knife he carries.

Resourceful, brave, observant, practical, and somewhat trusting (initially). He is quick-thinking in a crisis but can be naive about supernatural dangers.

Attire: Simple, dark, and practical Lapp-style clothing, possibly made of coarse wool or animal hides, but with an underlying strangeness or subtle magical embellishment. Perhaps a dark blue or grey gákti (traditional Sámi dress) made of thick wool, with simple leather boots and a plain headscarf.

Wants: To toy with humans, to demonstrate her power, possibly to cause minor harm or inconvenience for her own amusement.

Flaw: Her power can be countered by human ingenuity (the knife thrown at the storm), though she quickly regains control.

Remains unchanged, a static force of nature and magic, serving as a catalyst for the hunter's journey.

Her intense, knowing eyes that seem to hold ancient secrets, contrasting with her otherwise plain appearance.

Deceptive, powerful, cunning, mischievous, and potentially malevolent. She enjoys playing tricks on humans and demonstrating her magical prowess.
