The moon was going to sleep. The stars were getting sleepy too. It was almost morning for the little Elves. Their happy party was done. Their sweet songs were over. They had good fun.

The night wind rocked the flowers. The flowers slept soundly. The Little Elves looked at the sky. It was almost morning. Birds would sing soon. The Elves must go now.

They flew over the sleeping earth. They flew very quietly. No one saw them. They sent sweet dreams. Happy dreams went to children. The children slept well. They made the dreams good.

Only the bright stars saw them. Only the soft flowers knew their secret. This made their work special. It was a happy secret.

The Little Elves watched small birds. They smelled sweet flowers. They saw busy bees work. They learned many lessons. They learned to be kind. They learned to be helpful. They wanted to make friends. They were good to all.

People did not see them. But the Elves knew. Kind hearts felt happy. Their magic made joy. The Elves felt this joy too. It was a good feeling.

They hoped to meet again soon. They hoped for happy faces. They hoped for light hearts. Everyone would be joyful then. They wished for much fun.

The sky in the east changed. It started to get pink. The sun would come soon. The Little Elves opened their wings. Their wings were very shiny. They were ready to fly home.

A bright star shone. It was the morning star. It showed them the way home. They waved goodbye. They waved to the sleeping world. They flew up high, high.

The soft music stopped. The Elves' wings shone brightly. They flew up, up. They flew far away. They were very quiet. They made no sound at all. They moved like air.

The flowers closed their petals. They looked like sleepy eyes. The little winds stopped blowing. The Elves' fun night was over. Their learning time was done. All was quiet now. Their secret work was done.

FAIRY SONG.

The moonlight fades from flower and tree,

And the stars dim one by one;

The tale is told, the song is sung,

And the Fairy feast is done.

The night-wind rocks the sleeping flowers,

And sings to them, soft and low.

The early birds erelong will wake:

’T is time for the Elves to go.

O’er the sleeping earth we silently pass,

Unseen by mortal eye,

And send sweet dreams, as we lightly float

Through the quiet moonlit sky;—

For the stars’ soft eyes alone may see,

And the flowers alone may know,

The feasts we hold, the tales we tell:

So ’t is time for the Elves to go.

From bird, and blossom, and bee,

We learn the lessons they teach;

And seek, by kindly deeds, to win

A loving friend in each.

And though unseen on earth we dwell,

Sweet voices whisper low,

And gentle hearts most joyously greet

The Elves where’er they go.

When next we meet in the Fairy dell,

May the silver moon’s soft light

Shine then on faces gay as now,

And Elfin hearts as light.

Now spread each wing, for the eastern sky

With sunlight soon will glow.

The morning star shall light us home:

Farewell! for the Elves must go.

As the music ceased, with a soft, rustling sound the Elves spread their shining wings, and flew silently over the sleeping earth; the flowers closed their bright eyes, the little winds were still, for the feast was over, and the Fairy lessons ended.
