Far away, under the sea. A big blue sea. There is a secret island. It is a magic island. This island hides deep down. No one sees it often. It is a very special place.

Long, long ago, this island was not hidden. It was on top of the water. Manannan was a sea god. He ruled a land called Mann then. The island was his home. Manannan lived there gladly.

Then, Saint Patrick came to Mann. He was a very good man. Saint Patrick told Manannan to leave. Manannan was sad. Manannan had many friends. They looked like three-legged creatures. Saint Patrick sent them all away. They left the land of Mann. Manannan felt very bad.

Manannan was sad. He took his magic island. He dropped it into the deep sea. The island went down, down, down. It became his new home there. Manannan ruled this hidden island. He ruled it like he ruled Mann before. He was the sea king. He was strong.

But the island does not stay hidden always. Once each seven years, it comes up. It comes up from the deep sea. This happens before the sun comes up. It is a very special day. It is a magic time to see. The island rises slowly.

Manannan sees his old land. He looks at Mann. He sees it from his magic island. He watches. He thinks of his old home.

The island is very pretty. It is like a dream. It has green, green hills. White foam is all around it. Mermaids live there too. They have golden hair. They wash their shiny jewels. Birds sing sweet songs. Pretty flowers smell so nice. You can hear them. It is a nice sight.

Then the sun comes up. Its light touches the hills. The magic island goes down. It sinks into the deep sea. It goes slowly, slowly. The magic island sleeps again. It waits for seven more years. Then, it will come back up. It will show its charm once more.

THE ENCHANTED ISLE

Out under the Irish Sea, fifteen or sixteen miles south-west of the Calf, there is an enchanted isle. Long, long ago it was on the surface of the water—that was in the days when Manannan ruled in Mann—but when Saint Patrick drove Manannan and his men from the island in the form of three-legged creatures, they came upon this isle. Manannan dropped it to the bottom of the sea, and they were seen no more.

Now it is the home of Manannan Mac y Leirr, Son of the Sea, and he rules it as he used to rule Mann. But once in seven years, when Old May Day is on a Sunday, the isle may be seen. It rises up from the sea just before sunrise, like a beautiful vision, and Manannan looks once more at Ellan Vannin. The hills of the enchanted isle are green, white foam rings it round, and if you are near enough you may see the tossing arms and golden hair of the Mermaids by the water’s edge washing their glittering jewels, and hear the singing of birds, and smell the fragrant scent of flowers. But as the first rays of the sun rest upon its highest hills, it sinks into the deep, deep sea.

deity ageless male

A powerful, ancient deity with a commanding presence. His form is not explicitly described as human, but he is capable of ruling and being driven from an island. He is associated with the sea.

Attire: Not explicitly described, but as a sea god and ruler, his attire would be regal and perhaps made of materials reflecting the sea, such as shimmering fabrics or elements like shells and pearls, in ancient Celtic style.
