In a faraway forest lived a giant. His name was Jurko. He was very old and very big. He slept in the forest. He looked like a big, green hill. People walked on him. They did not know he was a giant.

Once a year, Jurko woke up. He was very hungry. He ate lots of yummy food. He ate and ate. Then he went back to sleep.

One summer, Jurko was very thirsty. He drank water from the lakes. The lakes became very small. People wondered where the water went. They looked at the small lakes.

One cold winter, Jurko was cold. He broke big trees. He made a big fire. Pretty lights went up into the dark sky. The lights were many colors. People saw the lights. "Look at the pretty colors!" they said.

A mama bear and her babies needed safety. They looked for a warm place. They slept under Jurko's big arm. It was warm and safe. Jurko did not move. He kept them safe all winter. The bears slept and slept.

A hunter found the bears' home. He went to get his friends. But when they returned, the home was gone. Jurko had moved his arm. He kept the bears safe. The hunter could not find them.

Jurko got very old. His hair turned white like snow. He grew into the ground. He was part of the earth.

He was too tired to eat. He was not thirsty anymore. He just wanted to sleep.

One winter, Jurko turned into a big rock. He sleeps in the forest now. He is part of the forest forever. And so, Jurko became a rock, sleeping forever.

Mutta kun he tulivat paikalle, eivät he enää löytäneetkään mitään.

Story DNA

Plot Summary

In ancient Finland, a giant named Jurko lives in the wilderness, so old he is often mistaken for a mountain. Periodically, his immense hunger and thirst cause significant, yet misinterpreted, natural events like dried lakes and the Northern Lights. He also subtly protects wildlife, such as a bear family denning in his armpit. As Jurko ages, he loses the strength to perform his cyclical actions and eventually freezes solid, transforming into a permanent rock formation, thus becoming one with the landscape he once merely inhabited.

Cultural Context

Characters

✦

Jurko Jättiläinen

giant ageless male

Immense in size, so large that people mistake him for a moss-covered mountain ridge. His body is vast and rugged, blending seamlessly with the Finnish wilderness. He is described as being so old that no one could count his age, implying a weathered, ancient appearance.

Attire: None, he is a natural part of the landscape, often mistaken for a mountain. He is likely covered in moss, earth, and perhaps snow or ice depending on the season, rather than wearing clothes.

Wants: Survival through basic needs: eating, drinking, and staying warm. Later, his motivation seems to wane as he ages.

Flaw: His immense age and eventual physical decline, leading to his transformation into a rock formation. His slow, deliberate nature also makes him a fixed part of the landscape.

He begins as an ancient, powerful, and largely unnoticed force of nature. He gradually ages, his needs diminish, and he eventually freezes into a permanent rock formation, becoming a static part of the landscape rather than a living entity.

A colossal, moss-covered figure resembling a mountain ridge, with ancient, gnarled hair and beard that merge with the earth.

Passive, solitary, powerful, ancient, protective (unintentionally or instinctively towards the bear family). He is largely indifferent to human presence, only occasionally noticing their 'small tracks'.

✦

The Bear Family

bear adult (mother), young (cubs) non-human

A mother bear and her cubs. They are described as a 'large family', implying several cubs. They are typical brown bears of the Finnish forest, with thick fur suitable for winter hibernation.

Attire: None, natural fur coat.

Wants: Survival, raising young, finding safe hibernation spots.

Flaw: Vulnerability to hunters.

They find a safe haven for winter, grow, and are protected by the giant's unwitting action, then presumably move on in spring.

A mother bear with several small cubs nestled safely within a giant's armpit, hidden from view.

Instinctive, resilient, family-oriented (mother protecting cubs). The cubs are vulnerable and dependent.

👤

The Woodsman

human adult male

A typical Finnish woodsman, likely sturdy and accustomed to the harsh forest environment. He would be of average height and build for a working man of the region.

Attire: Practical, warm clothing suitable for winter in the Finnish forest. This would include thick wool trousers, a heavy wool jacket or coat, sturdy leather boots, and possibly a fur hat or knitted cap. Colors would be earthy and muted (greys, browns, dark greens).

Wants: To hunt the bear for its fur or meat, a common practice for survival and livelihood in historical Finnish forests.

Flaw: Underestimates the true nature of the forest, failing to recognize the giant.

He discovers the bear's den, attempts to hunt it, but is thwarted by the giant's unconscious movement, remaining unaware of the true cause.

A Finnish woodsman in winter attire, carrying a hunting rifle, looking bewildered at an empty spot where a bear's den once was.

Determined, observant, practical, a hunter.
