A woodsman walks home with his axe. It is evening. He walks on a quiet forest path. The sun is going down. The trees are tall and dark.

He hears a noise. A cart comes near. A farmer rides a beautiful horse. The horse is strong and brown.

The horse gets a fright. It jumps up high. The cart falls into a ditch. The farmer falls gently on soft grass.

The woodsman thinks about going. He is tired. He hears a call. "Please help!" says the farmer. The woodsman helps. He is kind.

He pulls the cart from the ditch. It is hard work. He ties the horse to a tree. The horse is calm now. It stands still.

"You have an axe," says the farmer. "You can fix my cart. Please help me."

The woodsman cuts a tree. He is very skillful. He fixes the cart with the wood. The cart is soon ready and strong. It is good as new.

The farmer gets in the cart. "Thank you for your help," he says. "I have no money. Take these wood chips for your children."

The woodsman takes two wood chips. He puts them in his pocket. He waves goodbye. He walks home. The path is dark and quiet.

His children are asleep. He takes the chips from his pocket. He wants to throw them away. They are just chips. They feel light.

But the chips are not wood. They are now gold! They shine brightly in the dark room. They are beautiful and bright.

The woodsman is very happy. He runs back to the forest path. He wants more gold chips. He looks everywhere.

He finds many chips. He carries them home. But the chips are just ordinary wood. They do not shine. They are plain.

Only the first two chips were gold. Being kind can bring good things. The woodsman smiles. He is glad he helped.

KOIVUN LASTUT

"Auttakaa!" huusi talonpoika.

Työmies riensi heti avuksi. Särkyneet kärryt vedettiin ojasta ja hevonen sidottiin puuhun kiinni.

"Teillä on kirves", sanoi talonpoika.
