METSÄLAMMEN SALAISUUS
by Alli Nissinen · from Hopeakauha: Satuja ja kertomuksia
Adapted Version
One summer night, a boy walked in the forest. The air was quiet. The night was bright. He found a small path. It led to a hidden pond. He sat on a big rock. He looked at the white mist. The mist was on the shore.
The mist began to move. It seemed to wave at him. The mist got thicker. It came closer to the rock. Inside the mist, he saw a pretty lady. She wore a white dress. Her hair was golden. Her eyes were kind and bright.
The lady spoke in a soft, sad voice. "Please help me," she said. "I need help." The boy felt scared. He did not move. "Touch my hair," she said. "Then I can be free." The boy was unsure. He stayed on the rock.
"I come up every hundred years," she said. "A boy's touch can help me. But I must wait." "Help will come," she said. "A man will build a house. His son will build a boat. That boy will come here. He will save me."
The boy listened. He felt wonder. The lady's voice grew quiet. Her picture faded with the mist. The pond water became clear. The morning light came. The boy saw the sun. He walked home. He remembered the lady in the mist.
Original Story
METSÄLAMMEN SALAISUUS
Ilma oli tyyni. Hiljaisuus vallitsi luonnossa.
"Sadan vuoden kuluttua saan aina nousta näkyviin aalloista", puheli vedenneito. "Jollei kukaan minua pelasta, saan palata takaisin vankilaani metsälammen alla."
"Kerro", sanoi poika.
"Kun aina sadan vuoden perästä saan kohota aalloista, voipi joku nuori poika koskettamalla minua, pelastaa minut kirouksesta. Mutta kerran on tuleva minulle kuitenkin varmasti vapahdus. Tähän rannalle on tuulen tuomista siemenistä kasvava komea hongikko. Silloin on rangaistukseni aika lopussa. Silloin tulee minulle vapaus…"

Characters
The Young Boy
A slender, average-height Finnish boy with a youthful build, likely fair-skinned from the northern climate. No specific distinguishing features are mentioned, suggesting a typical appearance for a child of the region.
Attire: Simple, practical clothing suitable for walking through Finnish wilderness in summer. Likely a homespun linen or wool tunic, possibly in muted earth tones, and sturdy trousers. Perhaps simple leather shoes or boots.
Wants: Initially driven by curiosity about the mist and the beings within it. Later, he is motivated by caution and a lack of belief in the water nymph's pleas, despite his empathy for her situation.
Flaw: Skepticism and fear of the unknown, specifically of water nymphs, which prevents him from acting on the nymph's plea.
He remains unchanged in his actions, choosing not to help the nymph directly. He learns of her curse and future salvation but does not personally intervene, suggesting a passive role in her immediate fate.
Curious, cautious, observant, skeptical, empathetic (he listens to her plight).
The Water Nymph
Appears as a beautiful, ethereal young woman, seemingly composed of or veiled by mist. Her form is delicate and graceful, shimmering within the fog.
Attire: Clothed in 'white veils' or 'white shrouds' that billow and wave like mist, giving her an ethereal and indistinct appearance. The fabric would be incredibly fine, almost translucent, like spun fog.
Wants: To be freed from her curse and imprisonment beneath the forest pond. She desperately seeks salvation.
Flaw: Her curse, which binds her to the pond and prevents her from achieving freedom without external intervention. Her inability to physically compel the boy to help her.
She remains cursed and returns to her imprisonment, as the boy does not save her. Her arc within this specific encounter is one of continued suffering and unfulfilled hope, though she foretells her eventual salvation.
Desperate, sorrowful, pleading, persistent (in her attempts to be saved), cursed.
Locations
Metsälammen Ranta (Forest Pond Shore)
A small, secluded forest pond shore with a rocky outcrop where the boy sits. The water is still, and soft mist rises from the reedy grass along the edge. The surrounding area is a quiet pine forest (hongikko) and open moorland (nummi).
Mood: Mysterious, serene, slightly eerie due to the mist and supernatural presence, yet peaceful.
The boy encounters the water nymph (impi) here, who is shrouded in mist and pleads for salvation from her curse.
Lehtojen Siimeksessä (In the Shade of the Groves)
Dense, shadowy groves where nature spirits (luonnon hengettäret) move. It's a place of deep quiet and semi-darkness, even during the bright summer night, with old, moss-covered tree stumps where guardians (haltijat) converse.
Mood: Magical, hidden, ancient, secretive, slightly mystical.
This is where the unseen nature spirits and guardians reside and converse, setting the magical tone of the story's world.
