Once upon a time. Leo lived in a quiet forest. He was a writer. He liked to think there. He wrote many stories. The trees were tall. Birds sang sweet songs.

One day, he saw a light. It was very bright. The light shone so much. It hurt his eyes. Shiny Fortune came near. She was golden and shiny. Leo felt very scared. His heart beat fast. He did not like the light. He tried to hide fast. He went behind a big tree. He wanted to be alone.

Shiny Fortune came closer. She found Leo there. She took his hand. Her hand was warm. She held it firmly. Leo could not go. He tried to pull away. He pulled with all his might. But she held him tight. Shiny Fortune stayed with him. She would not leave him.

Shiny Fortune looked at Leo. She asked him a question. "Why scared? Why hide?" Leo did not know. He did not understand her. His head felt fuzzy. He looked confused now. He felt a little sad. He just wanted peace.

Leo shook his head. He did not know her. He felt lost. He felt small. He said, "I do not know you."

Shiny Fortune smiled big. She said, "I bring many nice things."

Leo looked at her. He spoke very softly. He made a whisper sound. "Please, be quiet," he said. "Speak low now." The forest was quiet. He loved the quiet. Loud sounds hurt his ears. He did not want noise.

Shiny Fortune looked surprised. Her smile went away. Her eyes looked wide. Her bright light dimmed a bit. She did not understand. She asked Leo, "Quiet? Why quiet now?"

Leo smiled a little. He felt very calm now. He felt very happy too. He loved this dream. It was a sweet dream. He said, "I want to stay in this dream." He wanted it to last. Forever and ever. He closed his eyes slowly. He felt peaceful inside. The quiet forest felt good.

Fortune and the Fabulist

A Writer of Fables was passing through a lonely forest when he met a Fortune.  Greatly alarmed, he tried to climb a tree, but the Fortune pulled him down and bestowed itself upon him with cruel persistence.

“Why did you try to run away?” said the Fortune, when his struggles had ceased and his screams were stilled.  “Why do you glare at me so inhospitably?”

“I don’t know what you are,” replied the Writer of Fables, deeply disturbed.

“I am wealth; I am respectability,” the Fortune explained; “I am elegant houses, a yacht, and a clean shirt every day.  I am leisure, I am travel, wine, a shiny hat, and an unshiny coat.  I am enough to eat.”

“All right,” said the Writer of Fables, in a whisper; “but for goodness’ sake speak lower.”

“Why so?” the Fortune asked, in surprise.

“So as not to wake me,” replied the Writer of Fables, a holy calm brooding upon his beautiful face.

Characters 2 characters

The Writer of Fables ★ protagonist

human adult male

A man of average height and build, likely somewhat lean from a life of intellectual pursuit rather than physical labor. His movements might be a bit uncoordinated or frantic when alarmed, suggesting a lack of physical prowess.

Attire: Simple, practical clothing suitable for walking through a forest, but also reflecting his profession. Perhaps a worn tweed jacket, a plain linen shirt, dark trousers, and sturdy leather boots. The clothes would be functional but not luxurious, showing signs of wear.

Wants: To live a simple, undisturbed life, likely focused on his writing. He seems to value peace and quiet over material wealth.

Flaw: Fear of the unknown, aversion to change, and a tendency to retreat into fantasy or denial when overwhelmed.

He begins in a state of ordinary existence, is violently confronted by an overwhelming force (Fortune), struggles against it, and ultimately retreats into a dream-like state of acceptance or denial.

His 'beautiful face' transitioning from deep disturbance to a 'holy calm' as he whispers.

Fearful, easily alarmed, deeply disturbed by unexpected change, imaginative (as a fabulist), and ultimately prone to escapism through dreams or fantasy.

Fortune ⚔ antagonist

abstract concept personified ageless non-human

As an abstract concept, Fortune's physical form is not explicitly described, but it is capable of physical action: pulling someone down and bestowing itself. It might manifest as an overwhelming, perhaps shimmering or golden, presence that feels physically strong and persistent. It could be perceived as having an imposing, almost suffocating, presence.

Attire: No explicit description. If it were to manifest clothing, it would be opulent and overwhelming, perhaps flowing robes of gold or jewel-toned fabrics that seem to shift and shimmer, reflecting its nature as wealth and luxury.

Wants: To bestow itself upon individuals, bringing wealth and all its associated benefits, regardless of whether the recipient desires it.

Flaw: Perhaps a lack of understanding of human desire for simplicity or peace, or an inability to be truly rejected once it has chosen someone.

Fortune remains unchanged, successfully imposing itself upon the Writer of Fables.

An overwhelming, shimmering, golden presence that physically pulls and holds, radiating opulence.

Persistent, overwhelming, somewhat oblivious to the distress it causes, self-explanatory, and surprisingly conversational.
