The Moral Principle and the Material Interest
by Ambrose Bierce · from Fantastic Fables
Adapted Version
Once, there was a narrow bridge. The bridge was old. Water flowed fast below. Mr. Principle and Mr. Interest met there. The bridge was very small. Only one person could cross at a time. They stood face to face.
Mr. Principle spoke loudly. His voice was very loud. He stomped his foot. "Go down, you bad thing!" he said. "Let me walk over you!" He wanted to cross. He did not want to wait. He told Mr. Interest to move.
Mr. Interest did not say a word. He did not blink. He just watched. He stood very still. He looked at Mr. Principle. His eyes were quiet and strong. He did not move. He was very silent. He just stood there.
Mr. Principle felt a little scared. His loud voice was gone. He looked at his feet. "Let us choose!" he said. "We can pick who goes first." He spoke softly.
Mr. Interest did not speak again. He did not answer. He waited patiently. He stood very still. He looked at Mr. Principle. His eyes were quiet and strong. He did not move. He was very silent. He just stood there.
Mr. Principle felt very worried. His face was pale. He sighed a big sigh. "I will lie down," he said. "You can walk over me."
Then Mr. Interest spoke. It was his first words. His voice was calm. It was very clear. "I do not like walking on you." He said, "You hurt my feet."
Mr. Interest spoke more. His voice was strong. He pointed to the water. "Go into the water," he said. "Get off the bridge. Go into the water now." He told Mr. Principle what to do. He was very firm.
Mr. Principle went into the water. The water was cold. Mr. Principle splashed down. He was very wet. He fell off the bridge. Mr. Interest crossed the bridge. Mr. Interest took a step. He walked slowly across. He walked on his way. He did not look back.
Mr. Interest was quiet and strong. He was always quiet. He was always strong. Principle talked a lot. He was not strong.
Original Story
The Moral Principle and the Material Interest . . .
A Moral Principle met a Material Interest on a bridge wide enough for but one.
“Down, you base thing!” thundered the Moral Principle, “and let me pass over you!”
The Material Interest merely looked in the other’s eyes without saying anything.
“Ah,” said the Moral Principle, hesitatingly, “let us draw lots to see which shall retire till the other has crossed.”
The Material Interest maintained an unbroken silence and an unwavering stare.
“In order to avoid a conflict,” the Moral Principle resumed, somewhat uneasily, “I shall myself lie down and let you walk over me.”
Then the Material Interest found a tongue, and by a strange coincidence it was its own tongue. “I don’t think you are very good walking,” it said. “I am a little particular about what I have underfoot. Suppose you get off into the water.”
It occurred that way.

Characters
The Moral Principle ★ protagonist
An imposing, perhaps slightly rigid, figure of indeterminate height and build, radiating an aura of stern righteousness. Its form is not explicitly described as human, but it carries itself with a sense of uprightness and authority.
Attire: Perhaps a flowing, unadorned robe of a pure, stark white or a deep, somber grey, suggesting purity and gravitas. The fabric would be simple, perhaps linen or wool, without any embellishment, emphasizing its lack of material concern.
Wants: To assert its inherent superiority and right of way over the Material Interest; to maintain its perceived moral high ground.
Flaw: Cowardice and a lack of true conviction. It talks a big game but crumbles under silent, unwavering pressure, prioritizing self-preservation over its stated principles.
Undergoes a complete reversal, from demanding dominance to offering complete submission, ultimately being discarded.
Initially arrogant, self-righteous, and demanding. Becomes increasingly timid, compromising, and ultimately submissive when faced with unyielding opposition. Lacks true conviction when challenged.

The Material Interest ⚔ antagonist
A solid, perhaps slightly squat or broad figure of indeterminate height, exuding an immovable, grounded presence. Its form is not explicitly described as human, but it conveys a sense of tangible weight and stubbornness.
Attire: Perhaps a heavy, dark, and unyielding garment, like a thick, rough-spun wool cloak or a simple, dark tunic of a deep brown or grey, suggesting practicality and an earthy, grounded nature. It would be devoid of ornamentation, emphasizing its focus on substance over show.
Wants: To secure its own path and advantage, regardless of moral arguments. To maintain its position and ensure its own comfort and preference.
Flaw: Its complete lack of empathy or moral consideration, though this is presented as a strength in the story's context.
Remains consistent in its nature, achieving its objective through passive resistance and then decisive action.
Silent, unwavering, stubborn, and ultimately ruthless. It is pragmatic and self-serving, waiting for its opponent to falter before asserting its dominance with cold efficiency.
