A Man met a big Lion. The Man thought he was very smart. He saw the Lion. Man wanted Lion to look away. He stared at the Lion. The Man thought his eyes were strong. The Lion just looked at the Man. It did not move. The Man kept staring.

A Snake was near a tree. A small Bird was there too. The Snake looked at the Bird. The Snake wanted the Bird to come close. The Bird felt a little scared. But the Bird was also curious. It hopped a little. It did not fly away.

The Man still looked at the Lion. He did not look away. He thought he was doing well. "Hello, Snake!" the Man called out. "How is your bird?" he asked. "Is it coming closer? My lion is coming closer."

The Snake looked at the Bird. "My bird comes closer," the Snake said. "I am very good at this. Bird hops closer. It hopped more." It was still scared. But it was curious. It did not fly away.

The Man saw the Lion. The Lion came closer too. The Man did not like this. He thought the Lion would be scared. The Man felt a little silly. "Is this okay, Snake?" he asked. "The Lion is near. My staring does not work."

Suddenly, the Bird flew away fast! The Snake was surprised. It looked at the Man. "Stop trying," the Snake said. "It is not working for you. You should go now. Your plan is not good. Man thought."

A little time passed. The Man was gone. He ran away. The Lion sat down. It looked very calm. The Lion yawned a big yawn. It was not scared at all. It did not care.

The Lion spoke to the Snake. ""Man tried to stare at me," Lion said. "He tried very hard. But then he stopped. He ran away from me. He gave up his silly game."

The Lion smiled a little. "He learned a lesson," the Lion said. "Staring at a lion does not work. He went home now." The Man learned he was silly. Sometimes, trying to be clever makes you look silly.

The Lion and the Rattlesnake

A Man having found a Lion in his path undertook to subdue him by the power of the human eye; and near by was a Rattlesnake engaged in fascinating a small bird.

“How are you getting on, brother?” the Man called out to the other reptile, without removing his eyes from those of the Lion.

“Admirably,” replied the serpent.  “My success is assured; my victim draws nearer and nearer in spite of her efforts.”

“And mine,” said the Man, “draws nearer and nearer in spite of mine.  Are you sure it is all right?”

“If you don’t think so,” the reptile replied as well as he then could, with his mouth full of bird, “you better give it up.”

A half-hour later, the Lion, thoughtfully picking his teeth with his claws, told the Rattlesnake that he had never in all his varied experience in being subdued, seen a subduer try so earnestly to give it up.  “But,” he added, with a wide, significant smile, “I looked him into countenance.”

Moral

Overconfidence in one's own power can lead to one's downfall, especially when underestimating a true predator.

Plot Summary

A Man attempts to subdue a Lion with his gaze, believing in the power of the human eye, while a Rattlesnake nearby successfully mesmerizes a bird. The Man compares his efforts to the Rattlesnake's, but fails to recognize that the Lion drawing nearer is a threat, not a sign of success. The Rattlesnake, having devoured its bird, advises the Man to give up if he's unsure. Ultimately, the Lion devours the Man, ironically noting that the Man tried very hard to give up, but the Lion 'looked him into countenance'.
