Lily lives in a little house. She has a mama and a sister. Every day, Lily walks to the forest.
Lily picks up sticks. She carries them home. The forest is green and warm. Lily likes the tall trees. She likes the soft ground.
One day, Lily sees a child. The child has bright eyes. The child smiles at Lily.
"I can help you!" the child said. The Bright Child picked up sticks. The Bright Child was very strong. Lily smiled. They carried the sticks together. The forest was warm and quiet. Lily liked her new friend.
Then the Bright Child waved. Lily waved back. The Bright Child was gone. Lily looked around and smiled. It was like magic.
The next day, Lily walked to the forest. The Bright Child was there again. The Bright Child held something small.
"This is for you," the child said. It was a little rose. The little rose was small and green. A tiny bit of pink showed.
"When this flower opens, I come back," the Bright Child said. "We go to a beautiful garden together."
Lily held the little rose. It was soft. She smiled a big smile.
Lily ran home. "Look, Mama!" she said. Mama smiled. "That is lovely, dear."
Mama put the little rose in water. She put it by the window. Every day, Lily looked at it.
The little rose grew a bit bigger. It grew a bit pinker. Lily watched and waited.
One morning, Mama went to Lily's bed. Lily was not there. But the blanket was warm.
Mama touched the pillow. It was soft and warm. She felt something sweet in the air.
Mama knew. Lily went to the beautiful garden. Lily went with her bright friend. Mama was quiet. Mama smiled a gentle smile. She was not sad. She knew Lily was happy.
Mama looked at the little rose. It was open now. It was big and pink. It smelled so sweet.
The sweet smell filled the little house. Mama smiled. She knew Lily was happy.
The little house smelled like roses. It was warm. It was full of love.
Original Story
The rose A fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm There was once a poor woman who had two children. The youngest had to go every day into the forest to fetch wood. Once when she had gone a long way to seek it, a little child, who was quite strong, came and helped her industriously to pick up the wood and carry it home, and then before a moment had passed the strange child disappeared. The child told her mother this, but at first she would not believe it. At length she brought a rose home, and told her mother that the beautiful child had given her this rose, and had told her that when it was in full bloom, he would return. The mother put the rose in water. One morning her child could not get out of bed, the mother went to the bed and found her dead, but she lay looking very happy. On the same morning, the rose was in full bloom. * * * * *
