One day, I saw Sun. Sun was big and yellow. Sun was very bright. Sun was so warm. Its light touched everything. I looked at Sun. I saw its golden light. I had a question for Sun. I asked Sun, "Where does your gold go? You have much gold. What do you do with it at night? Tell me your secret."

Sun looked surprised. Sun did not want to tell me. Sun looked a little sad. He thought for a moment. Then Sun said, "I give gold to Moon. Moon needs my gold. She is often cold. He wanted to help Moon. Moon is often very cold. She needs Sun's warm gold. I help Moon every night. My gold makes her warm. This is my secret."

That night, I saw Moon. Moon was white and round. She was high in the sky. Moon shone softly. She was so pretty. I waited for her. I wanted to know her secret. I remembered Sun's words. I asked Moon, "Moon, Sun gives you gold. He told me this. What do you do with the gold? Tell me your secret now."

Moon looked surprised too. Moon smiled a little. She said, "Yes, Sun gives me gold. It is true. She held Sun's gold. She changed its color. It became shiny silver. I make the gold silver. Then I give silver to Sea. Sea is very good. Sea helps Moon every day. Sea works very hard. Sea works hard for me. I give Sea silver for his work."

I went to Sea. Sea was big and blue. Sea stretched far and wide. It touched the land. I stood near the water. I wanted to know the truth. I asked Sea, "Sea, do you get silver? Moon gives you silver. Is this true for you?" Sea did not like it. Sea made big waves. The waves were loud. Sea roared loudly. The waves crashed down. Sea was very angry. I was a little scared. I stepped back quickly.

I stopped asking questions. I learned my lesson. Some things are private. I decided to be quiet. I thought, "This is a secret. I will not ask more questions." But I looked at the fish. Fish swam in the water. They moved so fast. Their scales were very shiny. They looked like tiny silver coins. I thought about the silver. I thought about the gold. I wondered, "Where do fish get scales? Are they silver too? What a big secret!"

Sometimes, it is good not to ask much. It is good to let some things be. Some secrets are just secrets. Some secrets stay hidden. And that is okay.

THE SILVER

QUESTION

The Sun appeared so smug and bright,

One day, that I made bold

To ask him what he did each night

With all his surplus gold.

He flushed uncomfortably red,

And would not meet my eye.

“I travel round the world,” he said,

“And travelling rates are high.”

With frigid glance I pierced him through.

He squirmed and changed his tune.

Said he: “I will be frank with you:

I lend it to the Moon.

“Poor thing! You know she’s growing old

And hasn’t any folk.

She suffers terribly from cold,

And half the time she’s broke.”

That evening on the beach I lay

Behind a lonely dune,

And as she rose above the bay

I buttonholed the Moon.

“Tell me about that gold,” said I.

I saw her features fall.

“You see, it’s useless to deny;

The Sun has told me all.”

“Sir!” she exclaimed, “how can you try

An honest Moon this way?

As for the gold, I put it by

Against a rainy day.”

I smiled and shook my head. “All right,

If you must know,” said she,

“I change it into silver bright

Wherewith to tip the Sea.

“He is so faithful and so good,

A most deserving case;

If he should leave, I fear it would

Be hard to fill his place.”

When asked if they accepted tips,

The waves became so rough;

I thought of those at sea in ships,

And felt I’d said enough.

For if one virtue I have learned,

’Tis tact; so I forbore

To press the matter, though I burned

To ask one question more.

I hate a scene, and do not wish

To be mixed up in gales,

But, oh, I longed to ask the Fish

Whence came their silver scales!
