TO MY TOY CANARY
by Oliver Herford · from The Fairy Godmother-in-law
Adapted Version
Look at my little yellow bird. It sits in its cage, so very still. This is Sunny the Bird. Sunny is bright yellow. Sunny has soft yellow feathers. Sunny has small black eyes. Sunny sits in a little cage. Sunny is my toy bird.
Sunny is not a real bird. Sunny did not grow in a nest. Sunny is a toy bird. People made Sunny in a factory. Sunny is special to me. Sunny is my quiet friend.
Sunny does not need food. Sunny does not need water. Sunny just needs air. I have lots of air for Sunny. Sunny is happy with air. Sunny breathes the same air as me.
Sunny does not sing songs. Sunny is always quiet. I like that Sunny is quiet. Loud songs can be too much. Sometimes loud songs make me tired. Sunny is never loud. Sunny makes no sound.
I call Sunny "Wilhelm." Sunny does not care. Sunny just looks at me. Sunny does not know The Loud Man. The Loud Man is also Wilhelm. Sunny does not know him. He is very loud.
What if The Loud Man saw Sunny? He would be very surprised. He would be a little grumpy. He is always so loud. Sunny is always so quiet. He would not understand.
The Loud Man is always loud. He does not know quiet. Sunny has a special quiet gift. The Loud Man does not have this gift. He never tries to be quiet. He would be grumpy about it. He likes noise.
Do not worry, Sunny. The Loud Man cannot come here. He cannot hurt you. This place is safe. This place is quiet for you. You are safe with me. Always.
Stay here, little quiet bird. Be quiet all day long. Your quietness helps me. I feel calm by your cage. I forget the noisy world outside. I like to sit and think. You make me happy. You are my special quiet friend. The world can be loud. You help me feel good.
Original Story
TO MY TOY CANARY
Wee saffron sage,
Wee saffron sage,
Make-believe bird, fluffy, absurd,
In mimic cage
Through beady eyes you scrutinize
A Noisy Age.
You boast no “Tree,”
No painted shell your Natal Cell,
Your Pedigree,
Neatly displayed, reads simply, “Made
In Germany.”
What do I care
Tho’ to fresh seed you pay no heed—
Since on Plain Air
You gayly feast? Of that at least
I have to spare.
You do not pour
From your wide bill a gladsome trill,
Thanks be, therefore!
The best of tune, repeated, soon
Becomes a bore!
You simply stare
When I exclaim “Wilhelm” (your name);
You do not care
For William Hohenzollern, tho’
His name you bear.
What would you say
If William the Unsilent, he
Should come your way?
And fume, and pout, and storm—and shout,
“Lèse-Majesté!”
’Twould vex his pride
To see you hold that Gift of Gold
To him denied—
“Silence,” the sole and only rôle
He has not tried.
Fear not his grim,
Imperial ire; no torture dire,
No dungeon dim,
Your fate shall be: This land is free—
At least from him.
Wee saffron sage,
Pipe all day long your silent song
While by your cage,
Musing, I let my soul forget
The Noisy Age.

Attire: Implied to wear elaborate, formal military attire or imperial robes, reflecting his status as a monarch. This would include a high-collared uniform, medals, and possibly a spiked helmet (Pickelhaube) or a jeweled crown/turban.
Wants: To assert his authority, to be heard, to maintain his pride, and to avoid 'Silence'.
Flaw: His excessive pride, his inability to be silent, his quick temper, and his need for constant attention and deference.
He does not appear directly in the story but serves as a foil, representing the 'Noisy Age' and the antithesis of the canary's peaceful silence. He remains unchanged in his boisterous nature.
Proud, easily vexed, prone to 'fume, and pout, and storm—and shout', loud, imperious, lacking self-awareness regarding his own 'noisiness'.
