Adapted Version
Once upon a time, there was a little house spirit. His name was Halty.
Halty had a job. His job was to watch the house. He watched the fire. He watched the barn. He watched everything.
One night, Halty was not there. He was out playing. A spark from the fire fell on the rug. The spark made a fire. The fire burned the rug. It burned a little bit of the barn. It was scary. All the people ran outside. They were very afraid.
Halty came back. He saw the mess. He knew why. It was because he was not watching. Halty felt very sad. He cried a little.
Halty said sorry to the Farmer. He said sorry to all. The Farmer was kind. He said, "Let's fix it with you."
Halty worked hard. The Farmer worked hard. They built new homes. They built a new barn. The new homes were very nice. They were better than before.
Halty made a big promise. "I will always watch and help," he said. "I will not leave again." He promised this to everyone.
Halty stopped crying. He went to check the fire. He wanted it to be safe. He looked at the barn too.
Then, Halty heard a loud sound. It was a trumpet. The fire guard was awake now. He was doing his job.
Halty felt glad. He said, "Do your job, big or small. If you forget, bad things can happen." He said it again. "Always do your job."
Halty smiled. He went back to work. He always kept doing his job. He was always very careful. The house was safe and happy. Everyone was safe and happy.
Original Story
HALTIAN KERTOMUS.
— Minä lupasin kertoa sinulle, mitä saattaa tapahtua, jos unohtaa velvollisuutensa, alkoi haltia.
— Muutamana iltana vuosia sitten paloi tuolla alakerrassa iloinen takkavalkea.
Me teimme ripeästi työtä.
Samassa kuulinkin juhlallisen torventoitotuksen kartanolta.

Characters
The Haltia (House Spirit)
Small, nimble, and quick-moving. Its exact build is not described but implied to be agile enough to jump like a ball and sit astride a roof ridge. It is capable of physical actions like extinguishing embers and hammering nails.
Attire: A small, pointed cap, which it waves joyfully. This cap is likely made of red wool, consistent with traditional Finnish 'tonttu' (gnome/house spirit) imagery, and perhaps simple, practical clothing suitable for farm work, like a grey or brown tunic and trousers.
Wants: To fulfill its duty of protecting the household and ensuring its prosperity. After its failure, its primary motivation becomes atonement and unwavering loyalty to the 'old man' and the farm.
Flaw: Can be distracted by 'its own affairs,' leading to neglect of duty. This lapse in vigilance caused the devastating fire.
Experiences a profound fall from grace due to neglecting its duties, leading to a devastating fire. This event serves as a catalyst for deep remorse and a renewed, unwavering commitment to its responsibilities, transforming it into an even more vigilant and dedicated guardian.
Diligent, responsible (though capable of lapses), remorseful, dedicated, loyal, and somewhat melancholic when reflecting on past failures. It is deeply committed to its duties and the well-being of the household.
The Old Man (Farm Owner)
An elderly man, implied to be strong and capable despite his age, given his ability to rebuild the entire estate. His hands are significant, as he places them on the Haltia's head.
Attire: Simple, practical Finnish peasant clothing suitable for a farm owner, such as a sturdy wool jacket, linen shirt, and dark trousers, perhaps with a leather belt. Colors would be muted, earthy tones.
Wants: To restore his farm and home after the devastating fire, and to ensure the well-being of those dependent on him.
Flaw: Not explicitly shown, but his vulnerability is demonstrated by the loss of his entire estate to the fire.
Suffers a catastrophic loss but demonstrates immense resilience and leadership by successfully rebuilding his entire estate, even better than before. He embodies forgiveness and perseverance.

Flaw: Vulnerable to external disasters like the fire.
Experiences the loss of her home but is presumably rehoused in a new, better cottage as part of the rebuilding effort.

The Narrator
Not explicitly described, but capable of extending a hand to comfort the Haltia and traveling by carriage.
Attire: Implied to be someone of means, as they travel by carriage. Clothing would be appropriate for a visitor or guest in a Finnish rural setting, perhaps a practical traveling coat and hat.
Wants: To listen to the Haltia's story and learn from it.
Flaw: Not shown.
Receives a moral lesson about responsibility from the Haltia, which they are encouraged to remember.
Observant, empathetic (offers comfort to the Haltia), and receptive to the Haltia's moral lesson.
