It is spring. Heikki opens the cage door. He wants to clean it. Sirri flies out fast! She flies through the room. The window is open. Oh no! Sirri flies outside.

Sirri is very happy. She flies from tree to tree. She sings a new song. The forest is big and pretty. She meets many birds. This is her best day. The sun is warm.

Heikki is very sad. He looks for Sirri. He looks all day. He comes home for dinner. His home is happy. They eat pancakes. Heikki does not eat. He misses his friend.

Night comes. The forest is dark. It is cold. Sirri is cold and alone. She misses her warm cage. She misses her food cup. She finds no seeds. She is hungry.

SIRRI.

Heikin kanarialintu asui isossa rautalankahäkissä eteisen pöydällä.

Linnun nimi oli Sirri.

Oli kevät.

Sirri visersi ja varpuset kuuntelivat ulkona ikkunalaudalla. Siellä oli koko parvi kotivarpusia.

Sirri hyppeli häkissään, nokkasi väliin siemenen kupista, kastoi nokkansa veteen ja lauloi laulamasta päästyään; väliin se pani päänsä kallelleen ja visersi hiljaa suruisan säveleen.

Kukaan ei käsittänyt, mitä Sirrin viserrys merkitsi, mutta Heikin mielestä oli luonnollista, että siinä piili joku ajatus, ja sen vuoksi hän koetti tarkoin kuunnella lintunsa laulua. Hän piti paljon Sirristä, ja siksi hän tahtoi oppia ymmärtämään sen kieltä. Helppoa se ei ollut. Vähä väliä Heikki ja Sirri ymmärsivät väärin toisiaan. Ikkunan alla oli koivu, jonka lehdet pyrkivät hiiren korvalle. Koivun alla lirisi pikku puronen. Vetensä oli se saanut isosta lumi-ukosta, jonka sääret ja käsivarret sulivat kevätauringon paisteessa. Nenänsä ja korvansa se oli jo aikoja sitten menettänyt. Pojat eivät löytäneet edes sen vertaa lunta, että olisivat saaneet uuden nenän lumi-ukolle. Talvi oli mennyt menojaan ja kevään mukana tuli uudet leikit.

Lapsilla oli lupaa koulusta ja kevät loi iloa mieliin. Sirrinkin täytyi saada tuntea kevätriemua. Sen täytyi päästä huoneeseen lentelemään siksi aikaa, kuin Heikki puhdistaisi häkin lattiaa.

Heikki raotti häkin ovea.

Hei! Vilaus vaan, niin Sirri oli lentänyt läpi huoneen ja… pujahti ulos ikkunasta! Voi toki! Kuka olikaan jättänyt ikkunan auki?!

Sirri hyppeli riemuissaan oksalta oksalle. Hän lensi koivun latvasta haavan latvaan, haavan oksilta katajapensaasen. Heikki juoksi hädissään pitkin pihaa häkki kädessä. Viimeisen kerran hän näki Sirrin kuusen latvassa. Sieltä se lehasti lentoon ja katosi kauas metsään.

Heikki viipyi päivälliseen asti Sirriä etsimässä. Vihdoin hän palasi kotiin ja istui toisten lasten kanssa suuren pöydän ympärillä ruokasalissa.

Vilho siveli kädellä rintaansa näyttääkseen, kuinka pannukakun piti luistaa alas. Anna hyppi tuolillaan. Elsa oli vähällä pistää nenänsä pannukakkulautaselle ja pikku veikon kädestä putosi lusikka pöydälle. Hän nauroi niin, että tusina valkoisia hampaita kiilsi suussa kuin heleä helminauha. Käsiään kurottaen lapset odottivat ruskeata, sokeroitua pannukakkua.

Pikku Heikki yksin istui totisena. Häneltä oli kadonnut ystävä… ja sitä eivät mitkään herkut voineet palkita.

Olihan se hänen oma syynsä. Miks'ei hän huomannut, että ikkunan yläruutu oli auki?

Mutta Sirrillä oli iloisin päivä koko hänen elämässään. Hän lensi ja hyppeli, hän lauloi ja riemuitsi. Hän sai tuhansia tuttavia lintujen maailmasta tuolla suuressa, ihanassa metsässä.

Mutta sitten tuli ilta ja aurinko laski metsän taa.

Metsässä alkoi hämärtää. Linnut lakkasivat laulamasta. Kevätilma tuntui kolealta. Sirri pörristi höyhenensä ja asettihe pyöreänä pikku höyhenkeränä oksalle. Hän asetti pienet varpaansa hyvin lähelle toisiaan ja… nukkui.
