KUINKA FRITHIOF RATSASTI VAPUNPÄIVÄNÄ
by Zacharias Topelius · from Lukemisia lapsille 3
Adapted Version
I am Frithiof! Today is May Day! I am the leader! I ride my horse Virkku. I feel so big and important. Hop, hop, hop! Look at me!
I have a new coat. It is very fine and red. My hat is on my side. I have a shiny sword! The girls look at me and smile. I am the general! I am the best! I am great! I am the greatest general ever!
My friends are here too. We all have fun soldier clothes. We have a yummy feast. We eat many treats and drink sweet drinks. It is a very happy day! We laugh and play all morning.
Now we ride out of town. It is time for a play battle! I see a farmer on the road. He is walking slowly. I will charge at him! Go, Virkku, go! Charge!
Oh no! Virkku turns fast! He jumps to the side! He runs to a big barn door. I fall off! I fall down, down, down! Bump!
I land on the ground. I am in a big, dirty heap. My new coat is all messy with dirt. My hat is in a puddle. Oh, this is not good at all!
My friends see me fall. They laugh and shout. "Look, he fell! The general fell!" They point at me. "The general is in the dirt!" It is so silly!
"It was not me!" I say. "It was Virkku! He ran away!" The farmer laughs a big laugh. His goat laughs too. Baaa! Everyone is laughing at me.
I get back on Virkku. My hat is crooked. My coat is dirty and wet. I feel small now. I do not feel like a big general anymore.
"A cat should ride Virkku!" someone says. "A little cat!" Everyone laughs again. I ride away with my friends. I am a little messy. But we are still friends. Hop, hop, hop. Maybe tomorrow I will be clean again.
Original Story
KUINKA FRITHIOF RATSASTI VAPUNPÄIVÄNÄ.
Kas silloin hausk' oli Vappuna,
Kun poikaset ratsasti!
Ens'miesnä kun ajoin Virkulla,
Vank' Annikin säpsähti.
Mäkätti jäärä ja Halli haukkui
Mä huimin että se soi ja paukkui:
Lennä, Virkku,
Niinkuin sirkku!
Hopita, kopita, heh he lei!
Uus takki mull' oli ylläni,
Ja hattuni kallellaan,
Ja minuun ja miekkaan vyölläni
Nyt tyttöset vilkkui vaan.
Mä korskaks, ylhäiseks paisuin siksi,
Valittu kun olin kenraaliksi.
Lennä, Virkku, jne.
Ja jotkut meist' oli kasakit
Ja piikit ol' aseina,
Vaan toiset taas oli husaarit
Ja sapelit sivuilla.
Suurukseks mämmiä oli suotu,
Ja päivän kunniaks simaa juotu.
Lennä, Virkku,
Niinkuin sirkku!
Hopita, kopita, heh he lei!
Kun päästään kaupungist' ulos vaan,
Niin oitis jo tappeluun!
Ja piikit ja miekat heilumaan,
Ei aikoa arveluun.
Kas maamies juhdalla ajaa tiellä,
Se täytyy töytätä kumoon siellä.
Lennä Virkku, jne.
Mut siin' oli vanha krouvila,
Sit' en minä tiennytkään,
Vaan Virkku ties ja sen kohdalla
Hän syrjähän hyppäämään!
Se häijy huiskaht' ovelle tallin,
Mä maahan paikalla mullin mallin.
Lennä, Virkku, jne.
Ja pojat kirkuivat, hip hap hei!
Kenraali kas pakenee!
Mä kaikin voimini huusin: ei,
Mun ratsuni vehkeilee!
He kaikki nauroivat. Maamies ilkkui,
Myös juhdan silmä pilkaten vilkkui.
Lennä, Virkku, jne.
Mä jälleen selkähän kompuroin.
Voi lakkia, takkiain!
Mä täplikäs olin, minkäs voin!
Viel' ilkkua kuulla sain:
On miestä, urhoa kenraalissa!
— Ratsastakohon Virkulla kissa,
Lennä, Virkku,
Niinkuin sirkku!
Hopita, kopita, heh he lei!

Characters
Frithiof
A young boy of average height and build for his age, likely with a sturdy, active physique from playing outdoors. His face would show a mix of youthful exuberance and a touch of self-importance.
Attire: A brand new, well-fitted wool jacket in a dark, practical color like forest green or navy blue, possibly with brass buttons. A simple, round-crowned felt hat, worn jauntily tilted. He wears a toy sword (sabre or pike) at his belt, likely made of wood or tin. After his fall, his clothes are stained and messy.
Wants: To impress others, especially the girls, and to embody the role of a brave general during play.
Flaw: His pride and overconfidence, which lead to his embarrassing fall. He is also easily flustered when things don't go as planned.
He starts as a proud 'general' full of bravado, experiences a humiliating fall, and ends up as the target of his friends' and a farmer's mockery, learning a lesson in humility.
Boastful, imaginative, easily embarrassed, playful, a bit arrogant. He enjoys being the leader and showing off.
Virkku
A simple, well-used wooden stick horse, likely carved from a sturdy branch or piece of wood, with a horse's head at one end. It would show signs of wear from many children playing with it.
Attire: None, as it is a stick horse. Perhaps a simple rope bridle.
Wants: To be ridden and played with, or in Frithiof's imagination, to go to the inn.
Flaw: It's just a stick, so it can't actually do anything on its own.
Remains a stick horse, but its 'actions' cause Frithiof's fall and subsequent embarrassment.
Playful, mischievous (in Frithiof's imagination), seemingly having a mind of its own, especially when it 'knows' the way to the old inn.
The Farmer
A sturdy, weathered man, likely of medium height and a strong build from years of farm labor. His hands would be calloused.
Attire: Practical, durable working clothes typical of a Finnish farmer in the 19th century: a coarse linen or wool shirt, sturdy dark trousers, and a simple, possibly patched, vest. He wears a worn, dark cap. His boots are heavy and mud-stained.
Wants: To go about his daily business, likely transporting goods or himself. He is also motivated by a bit of good-natured teasing.
Flaw: None explicitly shown, but perhaps a tendency to mock others.
He observes the boys' play, becomes a target of their mock attack, and then mocks Frithiof after his fall. He remains unchanged.
Observant, amused, a bit mocking. He finds humor in the boys' play and Frithiof's misfortune.
Locations
Village/Town Street
A lively street in a Finnish village or small town, likely unpaved, with children on hobby horses and onlookers. The atmosphere is festive and boisterous.
Mood: Joyful, festive, chaotic, playful.
Frithiof, dressed in a new jacket and tilted hat, proudly leads a procession of children, some dressed as Cossacks with pikes, others as hussars with sabers, celebrating Vappu.
Road outside the Town
A rural road leading out of the village, likely dirt or gravel, where the children's mock battle takes place. It's wide enough for a farmer's cart.
Mood: Adventurous, energetic, slightly mischievous.
The children's 'battle' begins as they leave the town, targeting a passing farmer and his cart.
Old Inn and Stable Door
An old, rustic Finnish inn (krouvila) with a stable attached. The stable door is a prominent feature, where Frithiof's hobby horse unexpectedly veers.
Mood: Humorous, embarrassing, rustic.
Frithiof's hobby horse, Virkku, suddenly swerves towards the stable door of an old inn, causing Frithiof to fall off in a heap.
