I was walking home alone at night. The stars were bright above me. I walked home after visiting my uncle. The food there was very good.

I remembered yummy food. I played with my friend. She was fun and nice. I thought I was a big boy now.

I saw a bright star. It shot across the sky. It made me feel very small. The world felt so big.

The stars seemed to follow me. I walked, and they walked too. I stopped, and they stopped. I wondered if my friend was teasing me.

I still had some snack left. I felt in the middle of everything. I thought about the empty world. It would be cold without someone watching.

I knew God, my Father, was with me. He was holding my hand. I wondered why I had big thoughts. I believed the stars were God's eyes.

They watched over me. The stars followed me all the way home. I got home. I said goodbye to the stars.

I asked them to watch my friend too. I went inside. I climbed into bed. I felt happy and protected.

The stars watched over me. I fell asleep feeling safe.

ILTAKÄVELY.

    On ilta, tähdet kirkkahat,

    Käyn luota Lauri setäni.

    Ne kestit kyllä kelpasi,

    Ne hienot kestit olivat.

    Söin siellä lohipiirasta

    Ja Mainkin kanssa tauhusin,

    Kissaa ja rottaa leikitsin.

    Herttainen hän ja hupaisa.

    Mä iso mies jo olenkin:

    Olenhan yhdentoista ja

    Jo kolmannella luokalla;

    Yks, kaks saan lyyryn lakkihin.

    Ja silloin… Mitä? Tähtönen

    Kauniisti lensi taivaalla.

    Oi, suur' on Luojan maailma,

    Ja minä, oi, kuin pienonen!

Kas, tähdet, kuin mua seuraa ne!

    Kun seison, nekin seisoo, oi!…

    Ivallako se Maikki soi

    Jo "herra"-nimen minulle?

    Jäljellä tortun puolikas…

    Kuin kummallista kuitenkin,

    Mä olen, jos kuin kulkisin,

    Keskellä, Luoja, maailmas.

    Uh, olis tyhjää, kylmää vaan

    Maailman keskess' seisoa,

    Jos ei myös olis Jumala,

    Mi kaikki ohjaa kulussaan!

    Jos vaikka minne menenkään,

    Jumala ain' on luona vaan,

    Isäni Hän on ainiaan,

    Mä olen Hänen kädessään.

    Kuin näihin tuumiin tulinkin

    Käydessä luota setäni,

    Min kestit kyllä kelpasi,

    Ja suuhun paljo suotihin?

    Jumalan silmät kirkkahat

    On tähdet laella taivahan,

    Sen uskon aivan varmahan,

    Ja poveemme ne katsovat.

    Kuin kirkkaasti ne tuikkivat,

    Kummasti mua katsovat!

    Kun kuljen, nekin kulkevat,

    Kun seisahdun, ne seisovat.

Käyn kotiin — myös käy tähdet nuo.

    Mun retkeni ne tietää tään,

    Mä niiden tiet' en tiedäkkään,

    Ennenkuin pääsen niiden luo.

    Kotini täss' on. Hyväst' vain,

    Jumalan kauniit lyhdyt te!

    Kun yöllä mua katsotte,

    Niin silmäilkää myös Maikkiain!
