Once, a little bird sang a soft song. Sleep now, little one. Sleep in peace. Tuck your head under your wing. Good children walk on the forest path. They watch over you while you sleep. The stars shine softly in the night. God's love keeps you safe and warm. Sleep, little child, sleep in peace.

Sing, little bird! Praise God above. Thank the Creator for the spring. Sing a happy song to the sky. Your song brings joy to children. Angels hear you and protect them. The sun comes up, bright and new. All the world is happy and good. Sing, little bird, sing for joy.

Christmas stood at a snowy gate. It was cold outside. Christmas knocked. "Let me in from the cold," it said. "I have a heavy basket for you." The snow was soft and white. Christmas smiled a warm, kind smile.

The basket was full of gifts. "I bring gifts for you," Christmas said. "I bring gifts for everyone." "I bring candles and a green tree. I bring much peace, joy, and friendship." "I bring bright lights and sweet songs."

"I help the poor and hungry," Christmas said. "I help the sad find comfort. I make all the bad things go away. I bring happy songs from heaven." "I help everyone feel love and care."

"Children's eyes will shine like stars. Their hearts will get new light. My best gift I save for last. I bring Baby Jesus. He is the Light." "Baby Jesus brings love and peace."

"Will you welcome Baby Jesus? Will you let him in your heart? Will you let him in your home? Is your true joy God's peace?" "Come, Jesus, come into our hearts!"

When we welcome Christmas, we find joy. When we welcome Baby Jesus, we find peace. Peace and joy fill our hearts. Light fills our happy home. Everyone feels happy and peaceful. Our home is full of love and light.

PEIPON KEHTOLAULU.

(Kesäkuussa 1870.)

    Uinu vaan

    Rauhaisaan!

    Pääsi paina

    Siiven alle!

    Nukkuvalle

    Rauh' on aina,

    Kun on Luojan turvassa.

    Niin, ja metsäpolulla

    Hyvät lapset kulkevat,

    Pienokaista suojaavat.

    Pieni sä,

    Ylistä

    Suurta Luojaa!

    Kiitä kielin

    Riemumielin

    Kevään tuojaa!

    Laulain nouse taivaisiin,

    Laula riemuks lasten, niin

    Enkelit sua kuulevat,

    Lapsiakin suojaavat!

JOULULAULU.

    Lumisella portilla

    Joulu kolkuttaapi:

    Sisään sievään laskeppa!

    Vilun täällä saapi.

    Raskas, täys on korini.

    Sulle, muille kulleki

    Lahjoja on mulla.

    Saanko luokses tulla?

    — Joudu, joulu, jo!

    Kynttilät ja kuusen tuon

    Varsin vihannoivan,

    Rauhan, riemun runsaan suon,

    Ystävyyden oivan.

    Köyhä mies myös avun saa,

    Jota nälkä ahdistaa;

    Suru, murhe musta

    Löytää lohdutusta.

    — Joudu, joulu, jo!

    Pahan kaiken poistelen

    Piireist' iloisista,

    Virttä siivin enkelten

    Tuotan taivaallista.

    Silloin silmät lapsien

    Loistaa lailla tähtösten;

    Sydammet ne uuden,

    Saavat valoisuuden.

    — Joudu, joulu, jo!

    Parhaan lahjan, jonka suon

    Viimeks tahdon säästää:

    Jesus-lapsi, jonka tuon,

    Vieraaks mieli päästä.

    Mailman valon povehes

    Huolitko ja huoneeses?

    Onko riemus vainen

    Rauha Taivahainen?

    — Joudu, Jesus, jo!

Characters

✦

Peippo (The Chaffinch)

bird young adult non-human

A small, agile songbird, typical of a chaffinch, with a compact body and delicate features. Its size is about 14-16 cm, with a wingspan of 25-29 cm. It has a sturdy build for its size, capable of strong flight.

Attire: Natural plumage of a chaffinch. For a male: a blue-grey cap, reddish-brown cheeks and breast, a greenish rump, and two prominent white wing-bars. For a female: duller, with a grey-brown head and underparts, but still retaining the distinctive white wing-bars.

Wants: To praise the Creator, to bring joy and peace through song, and to protect the young.

Flaw: Vulnerability to predators due to its small size, and perhaps an over-reliance on divine protection without active self-preservation.

The story is a snapshot of its character rather than an arc; it consistently embodies peace and praise.

Pious, joyful, protective, musical, innocent.

✦

Joulu (Christmas Personified)

A robust, perhaps slightly heavy-set figure, suggesting abundance and generosity. Dressed warmly for a snowy Finnish winter, implying a journey through cold weather. The 'heavy, full basket' is a key visual.

Attire: Warm, traditional Finnish winter clothing from the 1870s. This would include a thick, dark wool coat, possibly with fur trim, sturdy leather boots, and warm mittens. A knitted cap or a fur hat would cover the head. The clothing would be practical and durable, suitable for travel in snow.

Wants: To bring gifts, joy, peace, and the spirit of Christ to homes, especially to the needy and sorrowful.

Flaw: Implied vulnerability to the cold if not let in, but this is more a rhetorical device to gain entry.

The story describes its arrival and the gifts it brings, rather than an internal arc.
